How often do you give your kids a dust bath? Can they have too many baths??

1-2 times a week in the winter and usually 2-3 times a week in the summer depending on the humidity. Yes, they can have too many baths. Too many can dry out their skin and cause them to be itchy.

We let our Rugrats roll in the sand twice a day.... Any more than that, and they ride their bigwheels out into traffic.

It really depends on the humidity, and how much they are handled. The natural oils from our skin rubs off onto their fur.

You can tell when they need a bath; their fur just doesn't look as nice. If the chins had their way, though...they'd dust all the time. No self-respecting chin can ever refuse one!

I usually let her have one 2 - 3 days a week. When I let her out of her cage the first thing she does is run into the kitchen (that is where her dust bowl is). So I was a bit worried that she needed more. Now I just know she is just a normal nutty chin.

She's normal. They all do that.

In fact, when I have a chin escape and seemingly is not around, the escapee is normally hiding/sleeping in a duster. I can't tell you how many times I have been all freaked out about not being able to find a chin only to see a little head pop up out of a duster when I get near them. (Not with Sam though...)

LOL...Shelly will run into the kitchen and run in circles in the area her bowl would be. I don't leave it out if it is not bath time. I think I will let her have a bath tonight. She was rolling around in the dust from her lava rock when I put her back in the cage last night.

Okay, so now I know it's normal for my chin to always want dust, and I shouldn't give in to that. But if he doesn't have his dust, he digs and rolls on the top of his wood house. Is that normal too?

I am glad you said that..I think I know why Herby has been itching ( we have looked for signs of a fungus and everything ) and the only thing we saw was some dry skin. Now we have a possible cause..

Yes that's completely normal too. Phoenix does that all the time too. She rolls in her crumbs from the lava bites as well. I guess you can say not normal would be if she didn't want to roll around all the time.

My other chin is 5 month, Sedona, and she likes to scratch the door jams and the floor and roll even though there is no dust bath there. She doesn't understand the dust baths yet. She just gets in it and then just sticks her face out and looks at me. She will totally freak out if I put a hand full of dust on her back but I try to rub it around so that it kinda gets on her skin but she gets so scared so I don't force her to do anything.

I'm allergic to the dust so the less dust that gets on me the better. Phoenix seems to like to make fun of me and decides that its jumping on mom time afterward. She thinks that I need rescuing from the mask I have on and tries to bite it off since I only wear it on dust days which will probably be this weekend

Well in winter the air is really dry here so I let her dust about 3 times a week. In the summer when it's humid it's just about every day.

My chins bathe every day at their out-of-cage playtime. It's the first thing they head for and I think they'd spend their playtime looking for the dust if it wasn't there. I was a bit concerned they were dusting too much but they don't seem to have dry skin or anything so I'm guessing it's okay. I also live in an area that has very moderate climate and humidity. I do find my dark standards' coats to be greasier than my whites who never seem to look greasy at all. I love the coats of the standards though, so thick and plush.
