Do I need I big shelf across the middle?

I know I read somewhere that if a cage is over a certain height there should be a big shelf in the middle so they can't fall to far. I wasn't sure if my cage would need that or not and if so how big the shelf should be. The dimensions are about 20d x 30w x 36h

You could also stretch a hammock across the middle of the cage to catch him if he falls. And, yes, I would put either a shelf in the middle for his safety.
