Okay, so I've been researching and looking...and...and...I'm at a total loss. My family has a lovely 8pc. sectional. circ. 1980's very sturdy reasonably upholstered with the exception of the cushion covers and accent pillows.

SO, I'm hoping to re-cover them sometime in the near future. I have somebody that can probably do the sewing work but I need to purchase the fabric/supplies and I do not know where to purchase or what.

This is a sofa that gets a LOT of action. Two teens, two mini schnauzers...two toddlers...two adults...pairs and pairs of destruction. Needs to be a heavy duty fabric maybe corduroy? I don't know of any other heavy fabric make suggestions? I'm looking for something textured but not necessarily pattered...looking for something solid (maybe a chocolate brown) or with little pattern (this is a LARGE piece) Also wanted opinions on zipper vs. velcro for closures.

Finally, I don't want to spend a mint on this. While it's a wonderful piece, we're on a budget. So as thrifty as possible. I figure we'll need roughly 12-14y. for the 7pc that need covered. Then, maybe, if I want to re-do the accent pillows I'll get a second (complimentary) fabric of a different color.

SO, if anyone knows where I can get inexpensive heavy duty fabric that isn't terribly hideous (mostly just need plain, solid color) give me a shout out? Also, need advice about the entire project...anything you can add?

I know there's a LOT of people on this board who deal with fabric...I'm lucky enough to have a family member that can do all the sewing for a minimal fee...with some persuasion...but have no idea what supplies I'll need...or where to get them!

JoAnns has some really nice household fabrics. I think it was around this time of year that we bought our fabrics to drape our huge windows on our first floor. There was a sale on the fabric and we had a nice coupon and saved about 60-70% on the fabrics. Very happy with the fabrics we got!

:) I mean besides JoAnn LOL! J/k...I DO plan to make it to our local one in person to go over fabric types to see if something other than corduroy would work.

How does one get JoAnn coupons?!?

I think you can sign up for e-mails on their website or in the store. You can also get mailings of ads.

That link you posted showed up as thread!

Nope, it's me...it IS thread...duh moment :) see, this is why I need help! Does anyone know the types of fabric I'd be looking for...heavy duty but somewhat soft...and thrifty?

I've always heard good things about "Microfiber" covered furniture when it comes to pets. I've got a corduroy-"ish" material on my ancient recliners and it holds a lot of pet hair and is a pain to vacuum. My cotton covered futon is also a pain to vacuum but doesn't "hold" the hair as much as my recliner does. (Then again, I have a terrible terrible vacuum)

If you wait for fabric sales you can save SO much. Coupons are on joanns website

Microsuede is A one for durability and pets. We bought our couch and chair from Ashley furniture and it is the soft microsuede/imitation leather fabric.I LOVE it! Resolve upholstery spray or even a little Dawn dish detergent and the doggie/kittie spit ups and people stains clean right off. A quick rub across with Playtex gloves pulls the fuzzie hairs off too!

you don't have to sign up for their emails, coupons can be printed from here

Truthfully though, if you don't find it in the store, I find fabric cheaper from fabric.com. Free shipping over $35, and retailmenot also has awesome coupon codes. http://www.retailmenot.com/view/fabric.com
Their microsuede is cheaper than JoAnns, as is their corduroy, and depending on how big the pillows are, Fabric.com's is also wider.

How does one get JoAnn coupons?!?

How does one NOT? Lol. I must cut out 5-10 coupons per week from Joann's flyers that come to the house. Not to mention, I constantly get emails with coupons. If you actually go into the store and get on their mailing list (fill out a little form with name, address, email...) you will be flooded with coupons. I never head in there without a coupon (or handful of coupons) anymore.

Can't help with your other questions, but best of luck!
