Can anyone refer me to a thread for building your own appropriate chinchilla wheel? I'm possibly in the market for a decent home built wheel as well. I'm a bit of a craftsman myself, but after having realized how limited the commercial options are I would love to be able to support a chin entrepreneur. Glad to be part of a great community.

I made a wheel like the one shown in this website (third one down).
http://www.secondchancechins.com/safewheels.htm

I used a large cake pan and lazy susan bearing like the website did, but the bearing doesn't spin very well, even with a lot of wd-40. My chins just sit in the wheel.

If I save up some money, I think I would just get a Chin Spin.

I'm getting an extra dark ebony for a friend and dropping $100+ on a cage is bad enough. I might be prepared to get a silver surfer, but it would be hard to justify. I still can't believe they advertise 12" wheels as designed for chinchillas.

In the above link many people--including a Moderator--have said their chins run fine on the Silver Surfers, though I do understand not wanting to spend the mulah on them.
