I have 2 questions on dividing a FN 142.

1. When you divide it into two by using a solid pan on top what do you use to
cover the hole so the ones on top and ones on bottom don't go through when changing pan out?

2. Has anyone ever divided each cage section into 2 separate cages? So
making it into 4 individual cages. How did you do this? Do you have pictures?

Thanks.

1) When I intitially did it I took the plastic out of one of the shelves and placed it over the hole. Then I realized that if I take the metal divider thats on the bottom as a shelf, the one near the wheels and put that in the middle problem solved.

2)Yes, I made a divider for intros. I went to hardware store and bought some metal mesh and pine molding. I wired it too the wires of the cage 6 places in the back and 4 on to- and one that went down through the gap for the lock pins. IMHO split into four its not really big enough, but works great for letting the chins get used to sharing the area.

Theres actually a piece that comes with it that you can use to close off the sections. It's made out of the same wire as the divider.

My ferret's FN cage was separated into 4 different sections for chinchillas before I got it. The person took a piece of board and mounted it onto the back of the cage like you would shelves, with 4 bolts and some washers and screws. Then they attached a board perpendicular to that board so that the cage was split evenly at the door opening. I can probably draw it if you don't understand it.

Sarah - do you have pictures you can email me?

I know that dividing the cages into 4 is small but these are going to be my evacuation cages. Some of my chins are singles or doubles. They will have a wheel, tubes, shelves, etc in each cage.

If the chins aren't used to living together and don't get along, separating with a board will be safer than wire because even if it's 1/2" x 1/2" mesh, they can still bite off toes.

Just something to think about :))

Yes, that's true. But I had 3 boys and Louey just wouldn't get along with the others. So I divided up my FN 142 into 66% and 34%, how?? I put a FN shelf on the lower right side, so the 2 boys had 100% of the top, and jumped downstairs to that shelf. I put wire so they were stopped from getting going any farther. And Louey had the whole bottom left, and 10 inches underneath that shelf on the bottom right. He loved sitting on a shelf next to the wire where they all saw and sniffed each other. Yes, there is a risk, but Louey was happy for the first time in a year. We actually were able to put them all together now along with a rescue.

I do not have pictures. Sorry.

You can find the wire mesh as any hardware store and like Alli said even through 1/2"x1/2" they can bite toes off. I went with a very fine 1/6"x1/6" stainless steal. You could also just get 1/8"x1" pine strips and staple them to both side of the mesh. If you were to glue bolts in between the pieces of wood as threewingedfury said you could secure it with washers instead of wiring them in.

I could also draw up a design for it.

Thanks for the information I think I know what you guys are talking about. No need for drawings.
