Hi ! My boyfriend and I have two chinchillas (they are brothers). They are 6 months old. We've had them since Mid-March. They were originally living with me at school but I just graduated and moved back in with my parents so now they are staying at my boyfriend's house.
The night that we took them over his house was a disaster!!
I had come home to find Bentley with a swollen penis and testicles.
We took them to the Emergency Vet and they found a hair ring.
We left them both there overnight so that Dr. Doolen could look at Bentley in the morning. Then picked them up the next day and took them to the new house. With medicine.
Bentley has always been sweet, active, loves to cuddle and eat.
But since we took him to the new house and the vet he's been lethargic, seems scared, hides a lot, and sleeps a lot.
I'm not sure what to do.
I go see them everyday and my boyfriend takes them out everynightto play.
MoMo, his brother, hasn't had any change in behavior. If anything, he can't wait to get out of the cage and play.

Please help :(
Any comments are appreciated.

How long have they been in the new surroundings and have you checked for further hair rings? Some will get them very often while others seem to never get them. I have had males with more than one hair ring in less than a week before. There also can be medical reasons for chins having hair rings and he may need to see the vet again.

They've been at their new house for about a couple of weeks or so. I checked him everyday and he's not swollen down there or abnormal (I often compare him to his brother just in case). The vet gave us an anti-inflammatory - metacam I believe.
Everytime I've been there he's eaten, and takes the treats too (half a wheat). But he used to be the one always on the food bowl at all times and then play around and try to come out or the begger and now he'll eat a bit and then rest and won't beg as much as he used to.
My boyfriend said he's been popping fine.
But he keeps tryin to hide when it's playtime.
Once out he'll hide and then after a while then he'll run around for a bit only.
If his penis looks normal size and it's not out of its sheath, should I still look for hair rings ?
And thank you for the reply !

You may have to "woo" him all over again like he's a new chinnie, that was obviously a trauma for him, the move and the vet visit, you've (unintentionally) disrupted his whole existence, so treat him like you just got him, and slowly he may come back to normal especially once everything is okay medically!
