There is a lack of selection for what I can afford right now in Cages for Tobi. Currently, he has a cage like this: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/bilder/cage/robin/1/400/robin120apertabimba_1.jpg (Minus the stand and items in it) currently, with a ledge, hammock, tons of toys and a wheel. However, I was wondering if something more like this: http://www.petdiscounters.com/mc_images/product/image/d_2569.jpg would be better? Its not great, but I would like to make my own cage and this one would be until I can do that. I like the idea of more ledges. Its not long length wise, but it gives him more room to jump around in...

The biggest problem with the cage right now besides the lack of ledges is that he's began to eat the pan part a bit. It has very large "lip" area that he's begun to nibble at it... Although the new cage would have a "lip", its much smaller than the cage he has now...

What do you guys think? :hmm:

The link to the second one wouldn't load for me, so I can't do much comparing. First of all, is there anyway you can maybe get some wood or wire that he can't get his nose through to wrap around the outside bottom of your current cage? I'm assuming you mean he's chewing on the pan lip outside the wires, correct me if I'm wrong. I'd be worried about him chewing on that, since it is plastic.

Also, what price range are you looking for in regards to this next cage? Maybe you could find one without a plastic pan.

The first one looks bigger to me, but I don't know how much 7 inches is gonna do for him. Add sleep n ledges to the current one maybe until you build your new one?

Actually, he's eating the inside of the cage... I think I have uploaded some pictures (I bought the second cage and moved most of his stuff into it, so the old cage is empty for the most part in the pictures... I gave him a bath before I moved him into the new one too, so it is dusty in the picture of the chewings)

As for price range, I just can't afford the nicer cage I found, which was $330... Cheaper is better because I am a student, but I wish I could get him a better cage...

I dont think the white cage you have him in is that bad, but the bottom does look plastic and if he was eating the plastic in his previous cage he may start in this one.
I have hard plastic shelves & ledges in both my chins current cages (we are in the process of building a wood/metal cage) and neither one chew on them but I always check just in case they get bored one day and decide to start chewing!

Maybe you could get a large piece of fleece and cover the plastic and if you still want to use shavings you can put them on the fleece, but the fleece would cover the plastic.

Keep an eye on your local Craigslist. I find incredible cage deals on there all the time. Just type in cage, because it will pull up small animal, ferret, rabbit ones etc. Be sure to search for that in the "for sale" and "pets" section, also.

The "lip" part of the new one does not protrude as badly as the other one and besides sleeping and using his wheel, he doesn't seem to be hanging out on the bottom as much... I know he may still decide to eat the bottom on this one too, but I am hoping to make a cage before that... I just wasn't sure if I should keep him in his old cage or get him the new one until I had a chance to do so. I put more toys in his (now old) cage and it didn't seem to deter him from chewing on his cage, so I got worried...

We are in the middle of building a new cage for our 2 boys. I am doing a vertical split cause it is so big. my fiancee had made an alcove on each side for sleeping areas but the other day removed them because it was too hard to do. i will post pix as the progress goes along.

I am also a student. I agree check craigslist, for a good deal. You could always buy an fn 141 for about $150 at ferret.com and then later when you have the money purchase the add on. Thats what I did, I waited for my tax return so I didn't tap into my vet fund. It really was worth the money. Its easy to take apart and move and with the wheels on the bottom make it easy to move about your place, Both of which I know are important for a college student.

I can't imagine how much that cage is going to cost me to ship... I found nothing on craigslist, and have checked UsedRegina as well...

I saw some inexpensive cages at Klubertanz Equiptment in Wisc., but their websight is a little different!
They ship broken down, too, so that'll save some money!

As far as the chewing plastic; i have 3 chins--1 will chew on plastic, and 2 won't.
I've had to remove "all" of plastic out. I also gave plenty toys, wood, hay to nibble
and chew--i think it becomes an "O.C.D." with that plastic chewing. Good luck with
the cage search!
