Which would be better for my boys? I may be getting an awesome wood cage next weekend, but if that falls through the cracks, I need to have some other options in mind. I was debating about building one, but, in all honesty, I'm not that motivated here lately, lol.... so anyways, which one of the midwest cages would I be better off getting?

FN-- I have the FN and it has been around longer and you are more likely to be able to find add ons for the FN cheaper-- I think that the CN is a bit more expensive than the FN--

I don't have a Critter Nation but from the looks of them, I honestly think the FN is better. It is bigger as well, and cheaper.

I just got to looking around, and I found the FN for well under $200.... so I'll probably be ordering that if this other cage falls through :p

dont pay more then 165 before shipping. That is the price i found it for

My local Petsmart has a Ferret Nation for $183! they're holding it for me hehehehe

I'm not sure if this is a dumb question, but are the pans and shelves plastic? If so, are these a poor choice for a nibbler? I'm thinking about getting a cage with a solid level in the middle to prevent falling. My cage now is tall and has a giant hammock in the middle for safety but my little girl thinks anything fleece is a potty. Se also goes around it sometimes and I think she's taken a little fall. Also, are the pans deep enough to hold shavings or carefresh? They look shallow. And how do the shelves work if the whole front opens? can you put in wood shelves that attach the normal way? Thanks all :)

The pans and shelves are plastic, but you can order metal pans from www.bassequipment.com. They are called Ferret Pans and made specifically for the FN. The plastic pans that come with the cage are not near deep enough to hold the shavings without creating a mess. The metal pans do a pretty good job. The shelves don't attach to the front of the cage, so the door opens fine. You can make wooden shelves for the cage, just put whatever you're going to use to hang them on the sides and back.

Stackie, thanks for the info. Does anyone know how the middle pan stay there? Is there a ledge under it or is it held by something?

It is held in place by metal bars, but if you wish to leave that open, you can leave that piece out when you assemble the cage.

I put my wooden shelves right on the doors of the cage, so my chins have ledges to jump on all the way around the cage.

FYI, these things are a PITA to put together by yourself.... I only had my 5yo dd to help me.... what a trip that was!

I found my FN quite easy to put together. Actually did it by myself without my boyfriend's help and it took less than 20 minutes. It does help if you have an electric screwdriver though.

I just had problems getting the bottoms put in.... They kept falling out as I was trying to screw the pieces together. Once i found some zip ties, i was good to go... other than putting the bottom of the top section in up side down.... didn't realize it until after I had finished the rest of the cage. Had to take it apart and put it back together again, lol.

In my experience with putting cages together (which is pretty extensive, lol) not too bad really, but it is MUCH easier if you have another set of hands to steady things while you work.
