My chinny hasn't been eating very much from what I have seen since his vet visit this morning and I'm considering buying some critical care for him after speaking to the vet about him not eating/drinking.
The only flavor I have found near me is Apple banana. Everything I have ever read about chinchillas is to stay far far away from fruit. I don't understand... It's supposed to help chinchillas eat but won't it do more harm by being Apple banana flavor?

The apple banana flavor is fine to give. It doesn't actually contain either of the two.

You can also grind his regular pellets up(personally I use a small coffee grinder) and add the correct filtered water to make a loose paste/thick milkshake consistency and syringe feed that. It is acceptable to add a very small amount of pure canned pumpkin(just not the pie filling can) a tip from members here, to add flavor that chins seem to like. None of my 9 chins will take critical any of the flavors-even with pumpkin added. My fuzzy boys will only take their regular ground pellets with lifeline and pumpkin. Also check out syringe feeding videos before you try it.

Is it acceptable for the mixture of his ground pellets and water to be a little thinner and runnier? I made a mixture and he seems to be eating it (just very slow of a process). If it's runnier is it less food he is recieving in the mix? Also he is dribbling onto the fur below his mouth when eating. After a thorough wiping will the fur return to normal?
Thank you so much mercynursie

I mix mine just to a consistency to get it through the feeding syringe. Use unscented baby wipes to get the wet food off. Also don't worry too much about how much he is drinking, the feeding is mixed with water so if he's getting enough feeding he probably won't drink much,if at all from his bottle.
