I had one of the girls move my laptop off the bed. She moved it to the chair. Then not even 5 minutes later I went to get back on it and its not working.

Like it was froze up. I shut it off. Then when restarted this comes up...

Internal hard disk drive not found. To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive.
No bootable devices---Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility. Press F5 to run onboard disgnostics

Anyone have any idea?

Your HD be toasted, or a wire has come loose.

Easiest way to tell is to open 'er up, take the drive out and see if another machine can see it.

I can pull the HD on my laptop, if it's not in and locked all the way it will give me a similar error message.

Hey ... I know it may be a little late here. But any information you had on that drive can still be recovered. Most likely your servo burned out. But all the platters are intact, and even if you formatted there is a 95% chance it is all still there. Just in case you had any pictures or home movies etc...

And as a general reminder: 2.5 inch drives have about a 3 yr life span (sometimes longer for Seagates and drives spinning under 7200 RPMs)

5.25 Drives can last 5 to 10 years but should be changed at 5.

These are standard Department of Defense replacement times that were recommended by DELL.

Also if you ever throw one away... Take a drill and put a couple holes through it to destroy the platters. Identity theft rings look for old hard drives to reconstruct and steal personal information from.

Good advise there. Also replace when they start to sound like Darth Vader or make rattling sounds. For people that beat the crap out of their laptops and lose their drives every few months they have solid state ones you can buy now.

Those are still recoverable, so are burnt ones. :D

You can take a big magnet and stick them on your filing cabinet (or fridge), or let your kids play with them. I imagine Dell has requested it back and will part it out and repair other drives with it, but they're fun to take apart. Just watch out for the magnets. :))

Dont scare the little lambs... LOL It would take a forensic lab or rather expensive setup to do this. But yes... SPOOF IS RIGHT, IT CAN BE DONE:neener:

Spoof's advice to use solid state drives is an excellent one... Although if you wait 1 more year they will be much more affordable.

Thanks everyone.

The laptop is now fixed. Dell sent me a new hard drive. They sent it overnight by fedex and I got it this morning. They have to have my old one back before 10 days or I have to pay for the new one that they send me.
