I have a four month old Chin and I was wondering if it is better to have another companion for him. If so, what age would be best and what sex would be the best. I just want him to be the most content that I can possibly allow him to be. If that means investing in another, then I shall add another member to my family. Opinions are greatly appreciated.

This is a perfect age to get him a cagemate if you want one. I would get him another male, definitely not a female unless you want them to breed. I like to see my chins have a cagemate, especially when they are young. I often preach caution with older chins, but with a youngster like this it should be a piece of cake to introduce them.

Just remember, you should always have a spare cage. Even if they get along now, they may not down the road, even if they are together for 10 years they can turn on each other. It's just the nature of the beast.

They get along great in same sex couples. I had a mixed pair (male/female) and with the first litter I just had to spend 1200$ to save the mom's life when she had complications (spay), now I'm handfeeding mom and baby around the clock and hoping they live through this. @_@ Not worth the risk unless you are planning on being a breeder.

I think chins having a companion is great, and I agree that now is the age to do it. Whenever you try to pair chins you always have to be prepared for things not to work out (eg. have a second cage on handy) but pairing them when they're young is a great time to do it. You could get him a brother from another mother ;)
