I saw a chin that was dark brown with tan spots on him. What color would you say he is? I think they called him tan but I'm not sure. Thanks!

What do you mean dark brown with tan spots? Did his ear have spots or did his fur have spots?

Many tans have freckles on their ears so he could be a tan. Did he have a white belly? If so, then he'd be a beige. If the color was the same all around the belly then it'd be a tan.

If it had a dark brown mask and veiling then it'd be a brown velvet.

Or if it was white and brown spotted it'd be a tan white or pink white

So it really depends on what it looked like, there's many types of "brown" chins.

He's dark brown with tan spots. His ears are also tan. I don't think they have spots. They are just tan. And his belly is dark brown.

I'd REALLY like to see a picture of that one - not aware that combination of colors was possible!!

i found this pic on google. but the one i saw had more lighter colored spots.

If it looks like that one, it's a tan. Nothing with spots.

Those aren't considered "spots" really. A spot on a chinchilla would be some type of white chinchilla. Like a mosaic, eb white, tan white etc. Where the spot is the colored part. On a TOV animal, the dark part is the veiling, and the lighter color is the color of the fur. So like on a Brown velvet, the dark part is the veiling which comes from the genes of the black velvet chin, and the lighter brown color is from the beige gene. It's not spots, it's just a variation in color. I'm not sure how to describe it correctly.

A beige and an ebony :))

And there's different darknesses (called phases) of tans too. You can get light ones or dark ones.

Playing with this will give you an idea of what colors would produce which offspring:

I've had 2 tan kits born here this year - one came from a beige mother & white/ebony father - the other came from a medium tan mother & standard father. Any combination of parents that could result in beige gene & ebony gene together, could potentially give you a tan kit. And as mentioned, they come in different phases (light, medium, dark).
