I was wondering about the urine guards on http://www.bassequipment.com/Cages/Urine+Guard%2c+Tray+Liner/default.aspx, the inside ones, when looking at them.. Would the original plastic pans the CN cage comes with just fit right into the guards? Or do I need to buy a different pan? What would you recommend?

I'm looking to put the freestyle pee'er in the bottom level of the cage to keep the shape of the guards more simple.. I was horrified when I realized she was peeing on the wall and carpet. It's gotten everywhere! >_< This new chinchilla is so much work compared to my other one.

I read a review on the last one, and it doesn't sound very good.. :[ Also, I probably should have mentioned that I'm looking for something to go all around the edges, because she doesn't just pee in corners unfortunately.

As for the pans, did you mean .. use that instead of the plastic ones that came with the CN cage, along with the urine guards? Or just the pans alone?

Just the pans alone... they are 2.5 inches deep all the way around the cage

I agree, the pans would be a great help. Not only are they tall enough but then you don't have to worry about the plastic issue.

This has been alot of help. Thank youuu! I just bought pan 1 for now for her portion.. I'm buying the other one later. I'm very excited! Now to wait...

As a side note, are you using shavings or fleece? I had a "freestyle pee-er" as well, and when I switched to fleece liners, it pretty much cured her. She likes peeing on the fleece much better than she ever did with shavings, and it curbed her desire to pee on all the shelves. She still has an occasional lapse, but only maybe once every 6 months, so I count myself lucky.

She's on fleece and seems to only pee on that and the shelf the CN cage comes with. (looking to switch that out too eventually) She has not peed on the wooden ledges. I'm expecting for the fleece to become a problem once I switch to the pans though, because she has a tendency to yank at the edges.. I've had to safety pin them under the tray to keep her from pulling it loose. :< But we'll see how it goes.

Some people use velcro on the bottoms of the liners to hold them in place in the corners. I have also heard of people using magnets with the metal pans but not sure how it would work. Good luck.

I tried velcro as well. It did not work for me and do not use it in any of my cages. Having to get 99% of the hay out of the liners as well as washing the liners and pans, you would have to replace the velcro each time you change a liner. Another issue I had with the velcro was that a couple of my boys, being the little boogers that they are, were able to pull up the liner and get to the velcro. I caught one doing this one time and I was using the industrial strength velcro! I now just put a hidey house or a chiller on each corner and that has been working out pretty well.

Haha, I kinda thought of that after I had posted.. I remembered my little girl pulling apart the velcro on the ladder fleece covers that came with the CN. I guess I'll see how it all goes and adjust accordingly.
