I had a previous thread about chins sold from petstores and observed that, at least at my local store, they appear to be adult size, and not cared for properly, but sold at a price from the mid $100 range up to around $300.

I was wondering how this compared to breeders who sell chins. I've never looked into buying any more chins, but I'm assuming most chins from breeders are younger in age (vs. a petstore) and taken care of properly. How do your prices compare to these petstores?

Personally I'd say it compares pretty much to what they are asking. More in the $100-$250, with $150 being the average. A lot depends on location.
Most are generally younger animals, but it's not uncommon for someone to grow out a baby, take it to show, and then decide from there. Some will retire out a breeder to bring in younger animals. Those are generally less. At least with a breeder you generally will have history, and not be guessing how old the chin is. Plus most also add in extra's like feed, chews, etc in the form of a starter package.

i tend to sell my chins when they are not kits though i have sold kits too. often times a breeder will buy a kit from me but ask me to hold onto it and bring it to a later show at which they take the kit after i show it (they may put a deposit on the kit a few months before york and pick the animal up after the show)

prices vary but all i can say is that i have never gotten anything close to what i have paid for some of my breeding stock.

I think it depends on the mutation too. It seems like for standards of not great quality or as kits you can get them for $75 from some breeders while at the petstore they still sell for over $100.
I got Mei a beige from a ranch for $50. But she was a year old already. Kona I also got for $50 from a smaller breeder. She's a black velvet but was not good quality since she's a tiny little thing. Stuck up too!

I paid more for MuShu, but she's a better quality, the best one I own I'd say.

I've paid any where from $100 for a breeding pair to $140 for my ebony girl, all from breeders (big and small). My starting point for selling is $75.

What I was saying when I said based on mutation is that because I believe that there are more standards born, so in general when being sold as a pet, they go for lower because many people want something more "fancy" or what have you.
But other mutations may go for more if they are more rare. Or people who like to give fancy names like panda or extreme or whatever to their mosaics and white ebs may charge more because people will like the design on their coat.

I, too, start at $75 for standards, but go as high as $250 for violet-wraps, as they're fully pedigreed, and on the larger side. With my ebonies, it depends how dark and size. I've a tan velvet girl I'm currently growing out to see what she actually becomes, as she started as a tan, and now aquired the mask, but her mother was 950 grams and I'd like to see how she turns out. Probably keep her.

I think with breeders you will find better prices in general than pet stores. When we sell young they are generally cheaper because they haven't been shown or assessed for quality. We base our pricing solely on quality...and occasionally still do the "rescue" thing when necessary and rescues are adopted out very "cheaply" generally only $40 or so. I know when I took in 7 beiges a few years back as rescue, they were adopted out even cheaper than that and some of them were young animals. Age doesn't really matter to me.

Prices I've sold for are similar to those above. Standard out of mute males were typically $75. Price would increase for lineage, quality, show record - I never had "set" prices for colors. I've adopted out mosaics and violets for $40 - but they were rescues.

75.00 to 300.00 depending on color and quality. I have gotten animals for under 100.00 as well as paid 500.00.

Compared to most pet stores around here. My prices tend to be cheaper compared to what they sell. But I think people like it better getting from a breeder because you are getting experienced advice and I like to think better quality chin who has been used to human contact.

The only pet store I've seen around here selling chins asks $150 but never has any available. I ask $75 for the rescues because I see them similar to pet store chins - you dont really know what you are getting. But I figure half the price is better for the new family, and I send them with a starter kit of pellets, dust, hay, chew toys, etc.

Any animals I've raised here start at $85 and go up from there. Depends on pedigree and quality. Kits are actually less than older chins because you just cant tell how they'll fill out. Then I've also had the ones I bought for breeding who werent quite what I wanted, and resold them for about half what I paid.

I've only sold a few kits - most people feel bad for the older chins & they tend to find homes faster around here. Or at least thats my experience the past several years.

I've paid $100-$400 (mostly on the top end..) for ones out of my breeding stock from other breeders. I'd say that the chins I usually want to acquire begin at $200 and I've had one breeder tell me they wanted $750 for one chin though in the past. My kits sell for $100-$300 depending on quality and the mutation (or color so to say)...

Usually people who buy to resell to pet stores, only want small chins, because it's what the pet stores like, they sell better. Everything is cuter when it's a baby.

I start my std males off at $75, std females at $125, whites at $125, and go up or down from that depending on the animal. I've given animals away to good homes depending on circumstance. I had one boy who was attacked by a cage mate. Found him a good home with a gal who lost their chin about a month before and was looking for a same sex friend. They were willing to pay, but he'd had it hard and I thought he deserved a good home so I gave him to them. They were even willing to drive 3 hours to get him, but it happened that I ended up their way for some other things.

Every animal is only worth what you're willing to pay for it. My most expensive animal, someone else might not give $5 for.

My prices start at $75 and go on up to $300 for xdark ebonies. I sell the majority of my kits at 2 to 4 months old. It's very rare that I have older animals and those are usually ones I'm saving for show. If an animal slips through to 5 or 6 months without getting sold they are also considered for show and/or breeding and then usually sold at show.

I prefer the person to come pick out their chin vs having me pick it out and then when they get here they invariably pick a different animal - LOL or more than 1 animal...

depends totall on color and quality. I have sold a pet quality brown velvet for 75...and a great one for 175.

I've seen standard chinchillas from breeders as *pets only* ranging from $40-$75, at Petsmart and Petco they're around $160 for the same type of pet!

Out here most standards from breeders are relatively young and go for around $75, although I've seen standards for more. I recently spoke to a breeder about some sapphire/sapphire carrier females for $150. Like everyone's said above, depends on a few things.
