I was just wondering, for those of you who have seen chins sold at petstores, how much they were selling them for. I went to my local Petco store today, just to waste time and look at the animals, and saw they had chins for sale. They had plastic houses to sleep in and plastic tunnels which made me angry. The chins looked to be full grown and were priced at $150. I thought that was on the expensive side, especially since they can't care for them properly, but what is the average price these stores are selling them for in your area?

I think at the petsmart here they are $160. I have saw one on sale at a petstore once for $125, but that was the cheapest.

I haven't checked in a long time. A mom and pop store here sells them ocasionally for 50.00 to 75.00 but they get them from some kid that is breeding her 2 pet store chinchillas and she only has 1 litter a year. but other than that a few years ago (like 10) 119.00 at the petstores here

This was my most recent experience in a pet shop.
--------------

When I went to pick up Serena's lil chinchilla from Courtenay today I stopped in at the new Petland just to check it out. As soon as I walked in the front door, I saw a whole crap load of people circled around what looked to be open pens with small animals and birds in there.

I took a closer look and sure enough there were pens with guinea pigs, ferrets, hamsters and baby chinchillas. There were also about forty birds with their wings clipped. It was like a **** petting zoo and everyone was picking up all the animals, poking them and pretty much manhandling them. I was just so shocked!

I have never seen anything like this before. All the pet shops that I've been to have the animals behind glass with signs up saying don't touch or don't tap on the glass, yet Petland was encouraging all this mauling!

Needless to say I approached who seemed to be the manager and expressed my concerns. I told her that I was shocked that every person coming into the store was allowed to pick up and handle the animals and that I was sure that would stress them out. She of course disagreed.

I told her I was especially concerned about the baby chinchillas b/c this is the time of day they need their sleep. She said there was a mesh top over them so they were fine. I told her that I just saw people slide the mesh over, pick up their igloo and poke at them!

I pretty much told her shocked and disgusted I was by the whole mauling of the animals thing and said I thought the whole thing was absolute bizzaro and that I would never step foot back in that shop again. A lot of people heard me.

When I walked out the door, I had to pinch myself to make sure that I was not dreaming all this nightmarish stuff and that it was actually happening.

Has anyone else has this type of experience? This was the absolute first for me and I still can't believe what I saw. :tissue:

There's a local pet store here who has standard greys for $129, usually have beiges and bvs for $219 and occasionally have surrenders for.... I want to say $119

I must say I prefer breeder's prices. I got Cuda, my mosaic for $125 and my violet for $100. The rest are all rehomes, cept for Hash who my bio teacher gave me for free since he trusted me with a good home for one of his babies.

Petsmart here is selling for about...$189. Other pet stores are charging as high as $200 for a standard.

I think when I saw them at petsmart here they were about $160

And I'm not surprised with the Petland. I hate Petland. They get their puppies from puppy mills. We had one here in Appleton for a couple months but it then went out of business. They had chins there once marked as albinos but of course were beiges. But at least they were in something that they couldn't be handled. But the bunnies and guinea pigs were in open enclosures.

I found Farrah a few days ago at a pet store. She was originally from a breeder but her previous family sold her to the pet store. They said just her would be $200. But if I got the cage and all the suppies that she came she was $300. Pretty good deal with all the stuff.

But as every one has been saying and what I found out around here, they range from $85-$225.

Tiffany I love your quote! Makes me giggle, its so very true.

PJ's petstore which is the large chain store in Ontario, Canada I saw chinnies for sale around 200 and 300 dollars....in Canadian dollars though...very expensive...but they keep them in a huge cage with different levels...they do keep quite a few together...i hope they are sexed properly...

At the reptile store near my home they were selling them for $200. Both were beiges. The poor babies. The electricity had gone out and had been off for at least 2 hours. It was at least 85F in that store, if not warmer. Their ears were bright red and they weren't moving much at all. I offered to take them back to my house where it was air conditioned and they flat out said no. I offered to sign a contract with them saying I would return the animals the second the AC came back and then still refused. From what I heard the chins perished that night. I feel horrible. :(

Petsmart here is $169 for standards. There is only one other pet store around here... they are standards for $119 I believe.

The only chin I got from a pet store was a Petco surrender, which they don't charge for. It took a few months to get his diet balanced, and then I found him a pet home. Last thing I wanted was somebody who didn't know about chins to pick up a free chin.

$99 at the pet store down the street (not sure what chain it is)

Lol, thank ya. When you have five of the boogers, that sort of thing happens. Sometimes I wonder if my fiance loves me, or loves how my skin sparkles after a good day of dust baths :rofl2:

I got my first chin from a mom-n-pop petshop by my house, he was $90, but that was over 4 years ago. I had gone throught alot with that pet shop, won't get into details, but I trusted them because my boss was friends with the owner. Needless to say, they knew very little about chins and couldn't even tell me if they were male and female :hair: I go to Petsmart to buy my chins' bedding and my dog's supplies and I have only seen standard gray chins being sold there for $99-$119.

A few weeks ago, I saw them for $125 each. The poor babies looked so stressed and scared. I wanted to take them home! Of course, I didn't quite have $250 on me at the moment...i felt bad leaving them there :(
Essentia, that's so sad! Poor kids. At least you tried everything you could to help them.

I even offered just to take them in my car but they also said no to that. They suck.

See, some people are just...Ugh. They have no concern what so ever for the living beings they are selling. If I was the pet store owner, I'd have least allowed you to pull the car up in view and allow an employee to sit in there with you or something, or got a copy of your drivers license and allowed you to take them home on the contract that you'd bring them back.

The pet stores sell standards for about 140 and any others for about 160.

They had a lot of plastic items.
I was so sad.
