So I woke up this morning to 5 missing chins when apparently one of the doors to my ferret nation popped open. Two chins from one of the other cages were fighting with the escapees through the bars and now have bloody, biten noses. My big concern is with the 5 escapees themselves. They found the stash of snacks, including a very big jar of almonds. I know chins do not always digests nuts well so I am concerned. They ate a large number of them. Is there any symptoms I should be looking out for? Or something proactive I should be doing? After nearly 20 years of having chins this is a first for me.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You will definitely need to watch the chins very closely for diarrhea or constipation or other digestive problems. They will probably be alright, but you need to make sure that they are making droppings, drinking water and, later on, eating their food.

How bad are their noses where they were bitten? If it's more than a scratch, you may want to consider taking them to the vet.

Glad you found them all. I like to keep my treats in the kitchen but I think a tupperwear container might keep them safe from any future prison breaks. =P

Almonds should not be given to chinchillas. They contain way too much fat and can cause liver problems. I would take the alomds out of their diet asap. As mentioned earlier, watch for signs of diarrhea or constipation.

Tupperware??? No way -- it's plastic. That would just be an appetizer for them!!! LOL!!!
Glass jars/metal storage containers would be better.

Hope everyone is OK...

Ahaha too true, mine is on the fridge and the container with their pellets is up on a shelf so I didn't think about when its in range of teeth.

I swear the day I found out chins were plastic connoisseurs as a teen my dreams of pretty ferret tube playgrounds crumbled to dust like a well loved pumice stone. :O
