Ok, I'm a little confused on this whole topic. I have seen some posts on this but just really want to get the direct opinion on what we are doing. We have two little girls that are doing well and have no problems being around us. We are ones that travel occasionally and do have someone that would be able to watch them when we are going places that the girls can't come with too. Though sometimes when we travel it is to places where they can be and would be fine at, and it's less then 3 hours away.

We are planning when bring them to have both of them in there seperate small carriers while buckled in to keep them safe. Then also bring there full size cages and playpen so they can feel safe and still have there playtime like usual. We really are wanting to bring them but don't want to cause them excess stress. Would love your opinion, just on what you think? Wondering since they are still rather young if they can learn to handle travel.

Dawn travels with her chins back and forth to work every day and they do fine. I don't think chins suffer huge amounts of trauma by travelling, provided they have a decent sized cage on the other end, if you're going to be gone more than over a night or two (like at a show).

Sounds like you've got it covered, just be sure to keep them out of direct sunlight in the car and make sure your a/c is working. I know it's hotter than heck by us right how and it could very possibly kill your chin to be exposed to that high of heat for more than a few minutes.

I agree. As long as you have the air on & their carriers secure, once they are at the final destination and in their cages, they will be fine. And happy to be around you!

Yes, usually we are gone for only two nights, but still figure that there regular full size cage needs to come with so they are as happy as can be.... We are definetely caution about the heat. I know I'm a cold person. I'm always in blankets when at home so the chins can be in comfortable temperature. I defintely though check the air and much every thing is good to go a day in advance so we know no issues with temperature. Thanks for the opinion.

We just traveled with ours, 8 hour drive each way. We just kept them in a small cage out of the sun and out of the direct line of the A/C. They did fine. But they were very happy to get back into their 'real' cage once we arrived at our destination!..

I travel 3-4 hours each way with one of my chins, because she has some health problems, and as long as I keep the inside air as cool as possible and out of the sun, they are fine and usually just sleep the whole ride. But, I was also told by someone on here, NOT to put the carriers on the floor boards, as it gets hot down there too! And I also found that a light colored piece of fleece over the cage will reflect most light that may get in, such as with a shift on clouds, etc.

Mine have been all over the place, they travel every day. They have been camping many times, have flown on planes, long car trips with no problems-this is even with new rescues.

Thank you all for your opinion. Makes me not so worried about bring them with us tomorrow then. I really appreciate it, since I didn't think I should bring them with, but now really excited to bring them with us. Thanks again.

I always put a handful of hay and a couple of things to chew in the carriers if we travel with our chins.

Although I have official chinchilla metal carriers, when I drive to Santa Fe to see my sister (6 1/2 hours), i put Mr. Whiskers and The Snuggler together in (and Little Two Paws in his own) a cat carrier with their fleece tube so that they can cuddle together. They usually sleep most of the time.

Fortunately, as a "Woman of a certain age", I am more than happy to keep the car as cool as possible for them, even in the winter!!! I just wear gloves and a down vest.
