I was just wondering about Chinchilla tails. I was looking at Mira's kits tails today. I noticed that two of them have really bushy tails, and the little white male's tail has pretty strait and flat fur at the base of his tail. The tip of his tail is bushy. I was just wondering about the differences?

Im not sure that there are specific 'catergorized' differences (I could be wrong, for all I know there are different tails for each type of wild chin) but I have noticed this as well. And some chins have curly piggy like tails that drive people crazy when they are trying to show the chin and the tail keeps ruining the nice combed fur lol and I speculate that my one girl whisper had her tail tip bit off at birth maybe from mom? Who knows really but it looks stumpy like the tip was 'amputated' :/

Former naming conventions for wild chins had a species called chinchilla brevicaudata (now just called chinchilla chinchilla, but I digress), where brevicaudata means "short tailed". They were the thicker, broader body types that are typically bred for now, while the lanigera has a longer tail and a rattier body. As for other differences, I think it is just genetic variety.

Some chinnies just seem to be blessed with long, luxurious tails.

Cindy's Shelly comes to mind, as does Annie's Handbag...check them out!!!

One of my boys has a squirrelish tail, one had a thick decorative toilet brush tail and one has a nice and silky tail. It takes all sorts ;)

Awww, thanks Lynn. Miss Shelly does have a lovely tail.

It's not her best tail picture, but she's still looking lovely in it.
