I bought a chinchilla cage from zooplus.com and it contained plastic. So when I asked my mom if she could buy wood for new shelves she just said that it's probably chinchilla safe plastic, so I sent then an e-mail. They said that it's chinchilla safe.

Is it really chinchilla safe? If not, can I cover them with fleece or newspaper, or is newspaper too thin?

(I'm not using the ramps.) I'm getting him a few days.

There is no such thing as chinchilla safe plastic. All plastic is bad. They will chew it.

Newspaper is a no-no. You can cover the shelves with fleece, however, I'd suggest making at least 2 fleece covers per shelf as they will need washed.

As said, there is no such thing as chinchilla safe plastic, what the company probably means is that it's non toxic. However it's the problem on it causing a blockage if chew up and swallowed that is the issue not that it'll poison the chin. Newspaper is too thin, and the chin would just shred it anyway, also depending on the ink used, it could be toxic. Fleece works, but you will have to change the fleece a couple times a week if the chin pees on it, so as said you want at least 2 sets so you can use one and wash one. Also fleece only works so long as the chin doesn't chew it up, most chins don't but some do and you run into the same issue of causing a blockage in the chin's gut from chewed up fleece. You are really better off replacing them with chin safe wood shelves though, it'll be a lot less cleaning work and the shelves will be safe to chew on. Looking at the cage, you are also going to want to cover the bottom grate or remove it if you can otherwise the chin will hurt it's feet and/or break a leg.
