Hello - I posted about my Chinchilla's sickness here and got some advice,

http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34150

Since then we went to a new vet based on a recommendation on here. He took Xrays and diagnosed an infection in her teeth and that she had 'spurs' all along them and they'd need filing down. He didn't want to put her under to do that though until she was stronger, she's very under weight. So he gave us antibiotics and had us feeding critical care 4 times a day. He wanted to try this for a month.

We did the antibiotics and have been continuing with the critical care. There was a short time where she started acting a little better, but then things got worse. We started feeding yogurt as per the doctor's recommendation after the antibiotics were done about a week ago. But now over the past couple of days she has intense diarrhea and is acting very very ill. She doesn't want to run around (not that she was much anyways) or do anything but sit on us when we let her out. She goes straight to us like a lapdog and just sits there bunched up. As soon as we come near the cage she tries to get out to come see us. Her eyes seem half open all the time and her face looks puffy.

She's also sitting at the bottom of her cage and sleeping in her wheel rather than in her fleece tube like she used to.

She is eating a little hay and a little pellets, but of course way less than what used to be normal. The second vet that was recommended is on vacation now so even if he can do anything we'd have to bring her to some other vet - probably the one you guys didn't trust of her diagnosis.

Any recommendations? We put Pedialyte in her water and planned to try a little apple cider vinegar later. We also were giving alfalfa for a little to get her eating, but she ate it like it's crack so we thought we should stop that. We were also going to stop the yogurt today because we thought maybe that was causing the diarrhea. He had us stop the last night time feeding of Critical Care to hopefully get her to eat more of her food.

No more yogurt. If he wanted you to give probiotics, he's vet, he has BeneBac. Why didn't he give you that instead, which is safe for chins? Do you have a Petsmart or Petco nearby? They usually have BeneBac. You need to get her gut back in shape or she's never going to gain weight.

What kind of antibiotics? If it was Baytril, then you are battling several different things now.

How much critical care are you giving and how much weight gain has she had? When I have a sick chin, they get at least 120 mL of critical care per day. Is she taking in water? Get some Oxbow timothy hay (which I hate to recommend because of their price, but it's close) at Petsmart or Petco when you get the BeneBac. If she's got diarrhea, the alfalfa is too rich for her right now.

Get her back on the critical care. If she's got spurs all over her teeth, then stopping her from eating the food she can eat is not a good move. She may be on it for months before you are able to see results and are able to wean her off. She's very sick. The description you give of her face, where it looks puffy, is not a good sign. When I see a chin like that, I know that they are not doing well.

Get the critical care into her, get the BeneBac into her, make sure she's hydrated even if that means taking her to the vet for subcu fluids. She also sounds like she's in pain. Get some Metacam and I would get something for her gut as well like Reglan and definitely Mylicon drops. You are going to have to fight hard to save her at this point.

We're still giving the Critical Care - he just had us stop the night time feeding we gave. I'm hoping either our conversion is wrong or you meant 12 mL, because we're nowhere near that. He had us giving a syringe full 4 times a day, which looks to be 3 mL (1/2 tsp looks like 2.5 mL). That alone is hard to get in her and waking her up multiple times a day we thought she maybe was tired from that. To do 120 would be 40 syringes a day, not even sure I could eat that much! We've got the Oxbow already. I forgot to mention when she's sitting with her eyes closed on our lap she seems to wince in pain every now and then - almost like her teeth or something is hurting. Maybe we need to have her teeth worked on before she'll start eating normal?

In regards to the probiotics, I'm not sure - but he came recommended on this forum. The only other one in town specialized it seems is the one that did things completely wrong.

So for the,

BeneBac
Metacam
Reglan
Mylicon

Is there some kind of structure for dosage you'd recommend or will that be laid out on the package? Amount and length?

Thanks a lot.

An update - it's looking really bad now, like she's giving up. I was massaging her tummy and she diarrheaed all over ... it looked like the critical care we just fed her passed right through her. I am getting benebac asap tomorrow.

Edit: forgot to mention I could feel her stomach tighten and loosen as I massaged it.

If she's reached the point of runny diarrhea, I'm sorry to say, I doubt there is much you can do. She's lethargic, she's in pain, and she's dehydrated. Can you get her to the vet to get her hydrated? I would be amazed, with the description you've given, if she can wait until tomorrow. No, I wasn't kidding about the CC. I did between 100 and 120 mL per day for chins who were ill or would not eat for whatever reason.

Mylicon you can give any time. It's just baby gas drops in case of gas build up in the stomach. The Reglan is for the stomach also and is generally given once a day. Metacam is once a day. BeneBac you can give once or twice a day in split doses.

chin needs to get to the vet right now. that is your only course of action. what you have described can be life threatening and medical attention asap is needed.

Only vet open is emergency vet -is there something specific I should ask for if I go?

Everything I listed above. First and foremost - subcu fluids. She's got diarrhea, so she's dehydrating. After that pain meds, then stomach meds, and then start pushing the CC. Ask them to show you how to do the subcu fluids so you can do it at home as needed. You'll also want to keep her warmer than normal. She's probably shocky and chilled because she's in pain and so ill. It wouldn't hurt to wrap her lightly in a piece of fleece or a towel or and keep her on your chest when you can.
