Chinchilla name: Cloud
Chinchilla age: 4 1/2 Months old
Chinchilla sex: Male

Injury occurred: June 23rd
Time since injury: 11 days.

My chinchilla got hurt jumping all over the place in his cage I took him to the vet ASAP I didn't get him back until 2 days later, the veterinarian told me the cut must've healed over the weekend cause he wasn't able to see anything serious. Its been a week now and the spot where my chinchilla got injured seems to be worse. From a small missing section of fur, its becoming a larger missing section of fur. He also has crust on his eye and whiskers as well.

I will upload images of the injury up until now.

Someone please tell me whats wrong.

Honestly it looks like fungus to me. The continuous loss of fur and the "crust" you describe goes right along with a fungal infection. The 4th & 5th picture especially looks to be a fungal infection. A cut wouldn't heal completely over two days.

Have you ever heard of blu-kote? It works really well when treating fungal infections. You can also add a tablespoon of tinactin powder in his dust bath. Try searching "fungus" here on the forum and you will turn up some information and treatment options.

I never heard of Blu-Kote ever, I'm so affraid of losing this little Chinchilla im on my way back to the Vet now... Thank you for the great info you provided, any other tips to prevent/treat this issue (other then the info you have provided) if it occurs again ?

I'd say fungus too. Definitely not life threatening and it will probably get worse before it gets better. It comes on with stress or exposure to pets/people with it and a vet trip can be very stressful. You can use tinactin or sulfur in the dust bath - I use a ratio of 1 TBS to 1 Cup dust.

If you use Sulfur you should see the fur grow back in 1-2 weeks. Tinactin can take 3-6 weeks.

You can also put blue Kote on it or pretty much any equine type antifungal. I'd just go the dust route as it is easier.

Edited to say - if your vet gives you creams they are pretty much useless on a chin. The part you need to medicate the most on ringworm is the active outer edge - which is covered in fur. So if you do get a cream you either need to rub it in real good around the part that is already exposed and 1/2" into the fur or pluck the fur.

No need to panic. As hot and humid as it is this summer, eeeeverybody is going to be dealing with this crap.

I use the Blu-Kote and Tinactin in the dust bath at the same time. I've never used Sulfur before, but I'd be interested to see how it works.

Fungus leaves spores behind. You will have to thoroughly bleach out his cage and drag it out into the sun if you can. The sun kills that stuff pretty quickly. Boil and bake any wood, wash hammocks and stuff on high heat and dry on high, etc. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling him and change your clothes. Fungus is highly contagious and you can catch it.

Thank you so much guys, I was freaking out this morning, I didn't know what to do.. Just sitting there thinking injury would get better on is own after the vet said it was nothing.

I have none of those supplies so I'll have to get a hold of them in case it happens in the future. (hopefully not)
