I do not currently have and chinchillas but am looking at purchasing two of them in the next couple weeks and am looking at building a cage. I was planning on it being 3 feet long by 2 feet deep by 2-3 feet tall. First off would that be big enough once i put two shelves in it? Secondly i am planning on making the frame out of either 1x2 or 3/4 pvc pipe (mainly for weight and durability) which would be better?

I would say - for 2 chinchillas you will need a taller cage. They like to hop around a lot. The cages I have are probably around 4-5 feet tall and I have several shelves in it. Good luck building - you have more talent than me! :)

Just make sure there is no way of them chewing the pipes, plastic can cause impaction and kill a chin.

They'll much through a 1x2 as well, unless its completely wrapped with mesh fabric. Even then they'll still munch on what ever parts they can reach.

I have to agree with wranglersarah. I would go bigger. I did go bigger. I built my own cage too, and it ended up 5.5 feet tall, 2 feet deep, and 5 feet wide. It's a nice size for my 2 boys. Personally, I don't think I'd go any smaller, but I think the standard FN most people use is for 1-2 chinnies is ~ 4 feet tall, 2 feet deep, and 3 feet wide.
