if there is already a thread on this please direct me.............but I was wondering what an "average" weight for chins is? My standard is SO much heavier & bigger than my mosaic. But my mosaic was a CL rescue so I know nothing about his age, parents, litter etc...
I am going out tonight to get a scale. Since my standard was just at the vet I know he weighs 755 g but no clue how much the little guy weighs.

I would say average weight would be between 600 - 800 grams. Chins can range from 400 grams and still be healthy to 1200 grams.

Im gonna have to say that when comparing a rescue chinchilla there is no "average weight".

Most of the rescues I take in are very small in size. Not skinny or underweight - just small size - so naturally they will weight less compared to the pedigreed chinchillas that I breed.

A lot of chinchillas in pet stores vary in size as well. Some are big, some are small.

Make sure you feel the body for bones, etc - if he doesn't feel skinny or bony then he is fine - just small sized.

I don't know that there is really an average.

I have a minimum weight that I go by for breeding but for a pet I think it all depends on the chin.

Most of my males at 1 year weight between 650 and 850 grams. My female range between 750 and the moose weighs in at 1045 grams. She just turned 1 btw.

I think it is like with anything else. Some are small and some are large.

Personally over here, I have chins (who are over 1 year of age) that range from 430gms to 850gms. It just depends on the chin, their genetics, and activity level. Also you may notice your CL rescue will gain weight once he is on a good quality hay and pellet for awhile.

I agree with what has been said. When it comes to rescues or pet store chins you can get a wide range for weights. Many pet store chins are much smaller in size, but not thin. If ribs are felt, then he is thin.
