Hi, During my chinchilla's daily outside the cage exercise (we live in a small apartment so we just let him run around) he somehow injured his leg. He had burrowed under a couch pillow and my bf sat on him. Gorak (my chinny) ran away but we notice shortly afterward he was running around and not using his left hind leg. He didn't squeak or anything when he was partially sat on and it doesn't look swollen. This happened on a Friday, it is now Sunday and he is still not using it and is laying down on his side a lot more than normal. I was able to get a hold of our vet but they can't see him until next Friday. Does anyone know of a good chinchilla vet near Fairfax, VA? We are in Manassas but I think the only chin vet here is the one that can't see us until Friday. Do you think it's broken? We have some left over metacam from his last vet visit (chipped tooth) and have been giving it to him and have been keeping him in his cage. How serious is a broken leg?

i dont have much experience, so you may want to listen to someone else, but I just had a similar thing happen.

My chin broke her foot on Sunday. At first she was just sitting around. She would run if we tried to catch her, but wouldn't use that leg. We waited to go to the vet because we weren't sure if it was really broken or just sprained. Just a day later she was chewing her leg off because she was in so much pain. We took her to the vet 2 days after it happened, and it had to be amputated.

I did some searching online and found out that you cant even tell the leg is broken(unless the bone breaks the skin) so you may want to take it to the vet as soon as you can. My chin wouldn't eat or drink because she was in so much pain, and still 6 days after surgery she wont eat because of pain. Make sure they give you pain meds. We were only given enough for the day after surgery, obviously not enough. So we're having to force feed her. It's really sad.

A broken leg is very serious, he needs to see a vet ASAP.

I take both my chins to:

Pender Exotics Veterinary Centre
4001 Legato Road
Fairfax, VA 22033

703 – 591 - 3304

Their emergency center at the same address, it's open 24/7 so you will be able to see a vet.

Pender Centre is close to Fair Oaks Mall.

The chinchilla is in pain and is suffering! Please take it to the vet now if you haven't already. Friday is too long to wait. This is an emergency.
