Hi,

I have only owned chins for a few months and unfortunately it seems that I have gotten fungus. I took them to the vet and he told me to put sulfur on them (very yellow, smells terrible, on a q-tip) and give them a dust bath with tinactin in it. I have been doing this for about 5 days and it has gotten even worse.

I did take the cage and bleach it and let it sit. He already plucked out hair to make sure that the medicine was reaching the infected part but now it seems to be spreading.

The worst part happened today when I came home from work and the one chins eye is completely swollen shut. My dad helped me open the eye earlier and put in eye drops that the vet gave us but now it is swollen shut and even bigger than before. I am really worried!

Has anyone had anything similar or any advice?

Thank you so much!

By the way the liquid is sulfurated lime

It sounds like the frequent dusting may have irritated his eye.

The fungus should be getting better after a week, not worse. Make sure you wash your hands and arms before and after contact with them. There may still be something in the cage that needs to be thrown out or washed and dried out again.

I've thankfully never had fungus here, so hopefully someone who has experience will come along soon and can provide you with better information.

If the fungus is bad enough that ointment and tinactin in the dust hasn't helped, you may need to get an oral medication from the vet to help.

As for the eye infection, you will need to keep giving the drops. It would be best if you could clean the eye out really well before you put the drops in especially since it is swelling completely shut. Is there a lot of puss in the eye? You can burrito the chin and clean it out with saline solution and a q tip and then apply the drops.

Here is a picture of the eye. We are going to the vet but he wasn't open today so she will see him tomorrow. Just looking for some others input!

I'm so worried. It looks absolutely terrible and is breaking my heart!

Could this be a result of the medication if it got in the eye? Any advice what to do next other than see a vet?

I can clean it out the well now to even get the drops in.. By the way they are gel ones because it is that closed.. Almost looks like its stuck closed :(

What is the medication that is in the eye drops? Was the eye checked for a injury?

That is a nasty nasty infection and if that was my chin it would be on oral antibiotics, I would use trimethsulfate oral and neopolydex eye drops. This type of nasty eye infection is going to take forever to get rid of.
