So my previously bonded male chins are now separated because Snoops had a heat stroke and can no longer jump..thus he needed a cage with one level while Dre stayed in the cage with shelves. I therefore have Snoops in a chinproof section of my room, with Dre's cage (elevated) in the corner. I should also mention that when I put Dre and Snoops together, they now instantly fight.
Well, the past few days, Snoops has been making a crying noise for hours on end. It sounds like a communication noise, but frequently turns into a sort of squeaking that makes me feel like he's in a lot of distress. (According to the chin sounds website, it sounds a lot like the "mating sound when a chin squeaks affectionately (and a little bit despaired) for his wife, because he wants to be with her, but he MUST NOT..because they are in separate cages"

So obviously this makes sense, except that I have male chins and when I DO put them together, Snoops is the one who is immediately aggressive towards Dre. Why would he be calling for Dre if he doesn't like him? Is it just that he can smell him and its bothersome? Dre never makes a sound, I just feel so badly that Snoops is in anguish and I can't make him feel better.

When I was looking for a sound my chin made, I noticed the communication sounds and the sound you linked are quite similar. Maybe he was making one of these sounds?

All the sounds basically indicate the chin is a bit lonely, or one of them can indicate that or contentment in togetherness.

It sounds more like your chin is making the "warning call" and not mating sounds. The only time I've heard a male make mating noises like that is while he's swishing his tail and trying to mount and mate his cagemate.

Warning calls are a lot more common and sometimes end in a very sad little squeak. It's a call used to warn the herd about something that makes him uncomfortable. He may just dislike the area of the room he is in or he's complaining about something in his cage. Have you tried giving him very low shelves or a low fleece tube? that way he has some other options of places to go in his cage.

Okay that makes more sense. I mean he's definitely not barking, I know what that sounds like, but if warning calls can sound like this then that is what this is. He has a low shelf that he doesn't touch but I'll get more inventive and figure out something for him so he's happy. I never slept last night he was calling out so much!
