I have two male chins, Scout and Boo. They're usually pretty quiet guys, although I've heard Boo bark on occasion. However, last night I was woken up by their barks around 5am and was surprised to discover that it was Scout who was barking. I hung out with them a bit thinking maybe they wanted some attention but when the barking continued I gave them some food thinking maybe they were hungry earlier than usual. I also turned off my fan in case that sound was annoying them. I woke up again to them barking at 7am and hung out with them again and gave them their dust bath, but this didn't seem to excite them too much. It seems a comfortable temperature and I can't figure out what might be upsetting them. Any ideas?

The most likely causes are, they smells something (like smoke for example from outside depending on were you live if there is a forest or outdoor fire anywhere around or someone with a wood stove), or they could have heard a noise, they have very good hearing and can pick up on things we don't hear or notice, he could have had a nightmare, or they could be training you, they bark you come running, lol. It's good to check on them but when they continue to do it they start learning that they can bark and their slave comes and offers them things.

Another couple things to add, chins should have food available all the time, hay and pellets unless there is some medical reason not to or if they throw/dump their pellets. Also hopefully you already know and it's not, but a fan shouldn't blow on the chins, it does them no good as they don't sweat and causes a draft which could make them sick. You said it seems like a comfortable temp, what temp? Chins need to be in a temp under 75F with low humidity, or they suffer from overheating.

Haha, I really hope they are not training me. I will not be happy if I have to keep getting up in the middle of the night for them!
The food is available at all times, I add fresh food on occasion before it empties out.
The fan in the room was just for background noise, not blowing on them, so no worries! My house is kept at 72, so I think it should be comfortable for them!
Thanks so much! I'm hoping they were just messing around and there isn't an issue!
