I have a younger chin, around 13 months, who seems to want to play with my older chin. I've attempted to bond them but I believe Chimi is just too old and used to being alone that she didn't accept the younger one so she will forever be a single chinchilla.
Once in a while Chimi will escape the cage and Lilly(my younger girl) will get all excited and run back and forth following Chimi making soft coo sounds at her like the ones she makes when she's out for play time.
I often watch her watch Chimi moving around her cage sometimes making the soft noises at her. She has never shown aggression towards humans and didn't even fight back when Chimi showed aggression(they were separated through a cage wall).
I do know for a fact that she had a sister when she was back with her mom. If I did get her a friend it would most likely be when she's older(at least through puberty) and I am not looking to breed her so it will be another female. I have tried a cuddle buddy and she loves to groom it(I recently found out she's been doing this) but for the most part ignores it.
I know chin bonding is difficult at times(I've tried it) and that the pairs can turn on each other any second, but how can I really tell if she'd like a friend? I don't know if I'm just mistaking the signs or that with time she'll be better alone.

Some chins like living in groups and others don't. It boils down to personality. It sounds like she wants to interact with another chin but if you get another you may wind up with 3 permanent cages.

I've had three boys for years and all of them would be happy as a single chinchilla. They all have their own cage and out time because they are aggressive to each other. They even get jealous if one is getting loving. However I do think that they like having each other around and interact from their cages. I think that if your girl is happy she probably doesn't need a cage mate.
