I bought a cage from a garage sale that I thought would be perfect for my chinchilla, Peanut. After reading about them though it says that plastic could be fatal and the bottom of my cage is plastic. It doesn't have any edges that he can reach, but I'm still really worried about it. Is it okay to have the bottom be plastic as long as I don't notice him chewing on it?

As long as he isn't chewing, it's fine. Lots of people use plastic bottomed cages as well as plastic slide in trays with no problems. If you do notice him chewing though, I would get him out of it pretty quick. I've seen chins actually chew a hole through the bottom of a plastic cage and escape.

also you could always make a fleece pillow cover that would go right over the whole bottom.
i have plastic shelves in one of my cages and none of my boys have chewed.

when i first got snickers & oreo they were in a FN with a plastic bottom and i noticed some black stuff on the floor........sure enough one of them was chewing. so out that went and in went 3 inch galvanized steel pans. i have them in all my cages now.
