How many sq inches does a chinchilla need in a cage, or what should the dimensions be? I want Thor, my brother's chinchilla, to have a new bigger cage, but I know my brother probably doesn't want to spend a lot of money. I am looking at some different cages, but I am not sure if they are big enough. I have rats of my own, and there is a cage calculator for them that shows how many rats would be able to fit in a certain size cage. Is there something like that for chinchillas? Or could you recommend a good cage for 1 chinchilla that is not too expensive. I love the CN and FN, but that is a little out of our price range. :(

I'm not sure what your budget is or where you are located but they sell used FN's cheap on craigslist.

I've been keeping my eye on Craigslist. Nobody around my area (SoCal) ever seems to be selling one. I will keep checking, though.

Where are you in SoCal? I'm in Santa Barbara and may have a cage for sale...

it's a Martin's cage like this http://www.martinscages.com/images/full/h-600hr.jpg

I had two chins in that cage easily, so one chin would be fine in there. It has a pull out dish instead of a sit in one.

What's your budget? Maybe we could work something out...

I took out some of the metal shelves though, so wooden ones would be needed to be replaced-but I don't remember which ones I took out...I can let you know later

I think that with the more inexpensive cages at pet stores, you'll be seeing alot of plastic and not much bigger than the one you have now. How much can you spend?

Since Thor is my brother's, and he paid for Thor's cage himself, I don't really know how much he wants to spend. The cage we have was like $50, but I think he will definitely spend more than that. Maybe in the $100 range? He has a job, so possibly more. I will ask him tonight and explain why Thor needs a bigger cage.

I am in Thousand Oaks, so just about an hour away. We go to Santa Barbara a lot, so that would be great if we could arrange to buy your cage.

it's a really nice cage, and I'd love to figure something out, so let me know-It's been sitting in my living room and was being used for a bunch of rescues that came my way, but for the past few weeks it's been un touched (and cleaned fully of course) so again, let me know and we'll see what we can do.

If he's not willing to spend that much, I might have another cage that I could do for cheaper. Just pm me with the info (because now I'm rambling):neener:

Oh good - hopefully it will work out for you to get Oxchincerelyxo's cage.
If not, and you don't see something on Craigslist - try these classifieds, too.

They have the smaller ferret cage [size 24x24x41High] on ferret.com for $89, and their shipping isn't bad at all. I have 2 of these for 2 of my chinschillas. I just have one in each cage, I have a chin spin from quality cage and lots of shelves, and they are holding up great.. You just have to take out all the plastic shelves [i'm sure you know that] and even though the bottom is plastic I've never had a problem with my 2 boys getting at it through the wires to chew on it..

You might not like it, but just wanted to tell you about it..
Good luck

Jean

I live in socal and when I was looking I found TONS of bird cages in and around 100.00
They was nice ones too.
I would look in the pet section and also the for sale section in OC/LA/SD you should be able to find one.
FN-- have only seen one in 3 months and it was more then ferret.com sells them for online.
