I am interested in getting a chinchilla and I am aware that I will need a bigger cage but I was thinking that my cage that is 14X14X36 would be a good bigginer size he is less then a year old. I will have more room for a bigger cage once we finish the garage and move alot of my storage containers out to the garage. I was just wondering what you would feel about this for a temporary cage. I will be adding ledges to it and some fleece items. Also, some things for him to chew on. Any suggestions would be great. I have a plastic hut right now but will be building a pine hut, my husband is a carpenter so I have access to all his tools. Thank you for all your help in advance.

Some breeder chins live in a lot less. You said you will be getting a bigger cage later, so it should be fine. Or, if you don't already have a chin ready to go, you might want to just wait until you have all your stuff ready (including the larger cage) before bringing a chin home. Either way would work.

I got a pair off craigslist that come with a plastic igloo and I was advised to toss it because they would chew on it and it wasn't healthy.
