I am a new chin owner (6 months). I was going to buy a bigger cages with a stand. Right now I have a starter cage. I am also looking to buy a baby chin over the next couple of week, so I was wondering what size cage I should buy. I will use the new cage for my current chin, and then the starter cage until I can eventually put them together.

Is there a minimum or recommended size cage I should buy to eventually house 2 chins?

If the starter cage is one of those little one level cages, you're going to need to upgrade soon. The kit is old enough to be safe in a larger cage.

I don't know much about cage sizes, but the minimum size cage would still be pretty huge to house 2 chins. Plus, you would a back up cage in case they didn't get along, so double that money and everything else. Are you sure your ready to make the commitment for two chins?

I have a double ferret nation cage for my pair. I think it's the perfect size, and you can use the two seperate spaces to keep them apart for now.

i agree with the double ferret nation (FN 182).
it's great for two chinchillas, plenty of room.
if the chins were to fight and couldn't get along anymore then all you have to do is block the hole. and you have to seperate cages right there.
it lasts a long time, easy to clean.
and really fun to decorate. :)

We've now got 7 (*gasp*) chins, and at the moment have two (soon to be three) Critter Nation model 162 cages. It's got smaller spacing between the bars (for those with devious baby chins) and the bars are primarily horizontal rather than vertical...Which means that during playtime, the chins can, and often do, climb the outside of it and chill out on top. So, OTHER than that, it's exactly the same as the FN 182. They are a cinch to clean, and being able to section them off has been great when there are any chins in need of separation. A single cage with lots of little climbing shelves is plenty of room for a single chin, and in one of our cages two of the chins prefer to stay almost exclusively in the lower one.

thanks everyone for all the feedback. I'm going to try to buy one of either the FN or CN over the next. This was really helpful.
