For those of you who make your own shelves, where do you buy your supplies, as I'm assuming you get them in bulk?

Wing nuts, hanger bolts, and the metal washers is mainly what I'm looking for. I'm going to need a LOT of material.

This is what I'm figuring as far as materials... I'm making shelves for 3 cages...

Shelf lengths:
4 - 30"
2 - 24"
2 - 41"
4 - 24.5"
1 - 22"
1 - 18"

Total of approx 33' of wood, not including what I need to make the lips for the shelves

and about 60 hanger bolts, 120 washers(if I do 2 per hanging), and 60 wingnuts.

Help!

I have to order my hanger bolts from Fastenal for like $.40 a piece, Lowes is $1.19 for a pack of 2 I believe. My fender washers I get at Lowes in the contractor packs for $14 for 100. I haven't been able to find wingnuts cheap yet so I just use hex nuts which are $1.80 a lb at a local store called Agri Supply so I get about 100 for $1.80.

Tiff, do you think if I paypal'd you like $5 you could send me some hex nuts and just link me to which size hanger bolts you get to go with them?

I get packs of 4 hanger bolts for 80 cents at Menards. I hate those darn hex nuts since I can never get them tight enough with just my hands so I use wing nuts. I get them in a pack of 6 for 80 cents. Washers you can get in bulk at places like Fleet Farm or other similar farm stores. Not sure what you all have in your area. If you're going with hex nuts you can get those really cheap as well in bulk at places like Fleet Farm. I don't know that they have wing nuts in bulk though.

Thanks, Alli! Tiff's links helped a ton and I think I'll be able to get everything for about $30 (except for wood, or course). Now I see why shelves are so expensive! When all's said and done, it'll be about $100 for all my shelves lol

If you want to go thick on the ledges (I always use 2" because it lasts much longer) then they have 2" x 8" x 16' KD Whitewood at Lowes for less than $12. You can still find it cheaper at a discount place. So, call around. Wood isn't really that expensive.

I'll look into that. Our prices might be a bit more expensive up here, though (I know they were for most stuff we saw down in Lansing/West Jefferson when we were down 2 weeks ago).

Hanger Bolts, Wingnuts and Flat Washers

If any one is interested. I sell the set of one, which is one bolt, wingnut and flat washer for 45 cents. That is 1/2 the price of the stores, plus no tax and savings on gas. Shipping is calculated on weight of order. These are 1/4 inch in size.

PM me if you are interested.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I thought I'd mention this..

I called 84 Lumber the other day and ask how much a 8 ft long, 6 inches wide, and 1 inche thick KD pine board would be and they said it was $4.79. Every other place I called told me anywhere between $9 and $12.

So if you have an 84 Lumber near you, call and ask them.
