I keep hamsters in addition to chinchillas.
This past month, my 3 dwarf hamsters who are housed together have been diagnosed with mites & are now on Ivermectin. Their medication doesn't end until the end of this month.
This past weekend, I noticed that my Syrian hamster is exhibiting the same symptoms as my dwarves were when I found out they had mites: fur loss & flaking on the bare skin. So when I cleaned out his cage, I found this:
Does anybody know what this bug is? It's pretty visible to the eye, but it's probably not more than 0.5 cm.
Not all my hamsters have been affected by the mites, only the ones I mentioned in this thread are affected.
My concern is that (worse case scenario), all my pets (including the chins) are going to be affected by the mites & it's just a matter of time before they spread. I know that chins have thick fur & mites have a hard time penetrating through the fur, but that doesn't mean that they're resistant to mites. I've always kept my chins & hamsters in separate rooms.
Any suggestions & recommendations (& identification of the bug) are welcomed.
Thanks.
