Rocco was having playtime and he was in a sliding drawer. My mom went in to open the drawer and his foot was hurt somehow. I'm not home so I don't know the details, but my mom says he's not nearly as active and trying not to step on his right back foot. He's going to our exotics' vet tomorow. Do you think it's a break or just sore, and what could happen if it's broken?

There is no way to tell it's broken without xrays, unless of course you see the bone sticking through. If it is broken they can amputate--chinchillas actually do quite well with amputation.

Jordan, I know you are very worried and upset right now, try not to worry until you see what the vet has to say.

In the future I wouldn't allow Rocco out in areas where this can happen--better to be on the safe side with playtime.

If they do decide to amputate, ask them to take the whole leg. It's much easier for them to just have three legs than have three legs and a stub that gets sore very easily.

Hoping for the best for Rocco. As Laurie said, try not to worry. And in the future maybe you will want to be there for his playtime? I know as much as I love and trust him, I wouldn't want my boyfriend to take any of my guys or girl out for play time. But that is just me, obviously it's up to you :)
Good luck tomorrow!

Mom says he's a lot better now. She was really worried about him, so he must really be better if she didn't take him to the vet. I'm coming home tomorrow, so I'll check it out then.
Thanks for the support!

I'm almost positive it's broken. I'm so upset. I hope they don't have to amputate. What am I gonna tell his original owner?

The truth.

And how sorry you are for making an error in judgement by letting him have playtime in an unsafe area.

Please get him to a vet soon. Leaving a break unattended could cause a serious infection to spread through his body that could kill him, or the bone could heal wrong and cause his foot to be deformed. Not to mention I'm sure he is in an incredible amount of pain and needs pain medication.

Chins deal incredibly well with amputation. All chins that I have seen with 3 limbs could get along just as well as chins with all 4.

He's going to the vet today. It looks like its in the arch of his paw. Can they splint that? I'm hoping for the best!
