Hi! This is my first post and I have a question, okay so I recently got a beige chinchilla two weeks ago and for some reason when she is out for her play time her ears are fine, but as soon as I put her back in her cage the veins in her ears turn red and she lays down on the cage floor and seems to fall asleep, does anyone know why this is? I keep her in a room with good air conditioning

The red shows up more on a beige or a chin with pink ears than it does on a chin with gray or black ears. I can walk into the chin room and everybody there is fine, chilling and sleeping, and there will be a PW or a beige with bright red ears. My barn sits at 60 degrees on any given day, and 65 on a hot day, so I know it is cool enough.

How old is your chin and how long is your play time? It's possible that you are letting her run too long and she's just worn out when you put her back in. The flopping down and falling asleep is pretty normal for a chin with a longer playtime. Most people let their chins run during the day when they are normally asleep anyway. If your chin is young and you are giving an extended play time, or if it's an adult who has never had that type of exercise before, then you might want to back off on that for a bit until they become more accustomed to it.

If you can see the veins in her ears, that means she's hot. Do you have a temperature gauge so you can actually tell what the temperature is in the room?

It may be cool enough for her when she's in her cage, but when she's running around, that'll heat her up some, so it could be slightly too warm for that. I notice I'm fine in 72 degree temps if I'm just standing around... but if I start like walking around and doing stuff, then I get warm, you know?

If you can't tell what temp the room actually is, I would try turning the air down a few more notches so it's even cooler and see how the ears look after playtime. Though I would suggest that you get a thermometer so you can tell what the temperature is. I personally find it hard to judge what the temperature is (besides cold, cool, nice, and hot, lol) without an actual thermometer there to tell me.

Thnx for the advice guys! She is about 2 years old, I usually let her out for about an hour but I guess she may not be use to it, I just find it strange that her ears get really red every time

An hour is a lot right now, especially with the heat that is sucking the life out of everybody in the country. I wouldn't do more than half an hour every couple of days until she's used to it and until it gets nice and cool.

I tried only taking sandy out for about half an hour every few days, but even then she is fine, but as soon as I let her back in her cage, her veins turn bright red, the place where she is has very good air conditioning, she is a beige, so I am not sure if this is normal for beiges, does anyone else have this problem? Anymore advice?
