How often do you set off your fire alarm(s) cooking?

I do it every time I sauté using olive oil. It smokes just right...

Sorry Tara - I've never set it off. :)

I can't blame the significant other. He's off filming right now....... :hilarious:

We don't have one downstairs so I'm off the hook somewhat. If it was there, you'd be hearing it a lot. I don't like to cook and I'm not good at it. So . . . .

Apparently we need a new one I just asked Marshall about it, At my parents house with the working ones (I am going to kick his butt) I set it off everytime I cooked bacon,

When ever I cook bacon.. But right now with changing everything in the house I do not have an smoke detectors in the house.

The worst thing about our smoke alarms is they are run off of the regular house electricity as well as backup 9 volt batteries. Well the ceilings are about 14 ft. high and I don't have a ladder that tall so when the power goes out the alarms screech until the power comes back on. :hair:

I set mine off whenever I make oven fries. It's not that they're burnt... it's just something about the way they cook that sets it off! I actually take it down and put it in a dresser drawer when it's time to take them out of the oven.

I voted for "have one but never set it off" however, I have actually set it off once. But only once ever.

Current smoke detector I set off once by taking an extra long shower and then coming out of the bathroom before the steam had dissipated... but not cooking. I did learn that it's hooked into the apartment's electricity, so I couldn't turn it off :/

I had one apartment where I probably set it off a couple times a month while cooking (sometimes more) - I got pretty good at slipping out a chair, getting up, pulling off the cover, slipping out the battery (and then forgetting to put the battery back in for a day or two...).

Most of the places I've lived, I've only set it off a few times a year.

Mostly it has to do with smoke detector location and sensitivity in relation to kitchen and kitchen's ventilation system.

Now that I've said this, I expect that the next four times I try to cook, my smoke detector will get overly excited...

I set it off this morning actually, when using the toaster. But usually, it only goes off when I am using the oven. It is soooo overdue for a cleaning!

If I'm frying something and the flame is too high or if the oven has a spill in it I can set off the fire alarm. Then I'm too short to reach it. If my son isn't home, I have to drag a three step ladder over to it to turn it off. By then me and the animals are all temporarily deaf.

Buy one, put batteries in it and just set it on the counter. It's better than not having one at all. Marshall can install it when he gets the chance.

I've never set mine off with cooking but a few have gone off due to faulty detectors. :( OMG! what a pain it was to get to them to turn it off (13 foot ceilings)!

This is what I did, mine sits on top of the cabinets, easier to reach and turn off that way.

My ceilings are that weird square office panel type - not conducive to having detectors screwed into them. This house is over 100 years old and had never had a fire alarm in it before I moved in. Yikes!
