Hey guys I was thinking of getting bass pans but wanted your opinion first... I want to get them to keep the poop in more...do they really help a significant amount? also, looks wise do they stay looking nice? Or do they rust after awhile with all the pee? Any pros, cons and advice would be so helpful!

I have had the pans for a few days now, amazingly I haven't seen any poop or hay on the floor. I keep my hay box on the plastic shelf and it falls there, nowhere else. I'm guessing it won't rust - I had the same similar metal pans for a wire cage for 6 years and was fine.

Bass will make the pans an inch higher if you request it for an additional fee. They also will make urine guards up to about 8" tall. I do think it cuts way down on the amount of shavings that get kicked out of the cage. Another idea is to wrap about an 8" high piece of fleece around the bottom sides of the cage.

I've had my pans for years and years, they still look like new. I wipe them down every three days with a chin safe disinfectant, and I use fleece liners in the pans.

As for keeping in the poop, I can't really compare since I've never used the trays that came with the cage. The thing that helps the most is to put a 1" rim on all your shelves and ledges.

The bass pans can rust. Mine aren't rusted, but I purchased a FN with bass pans off of another chin owner -- rusted to all heck (and yes, they are Bass Pans). Some of mine don't look perfectly brand new anymore, but I plan on getting mine powdercoated soon to hopefully prevent further deterioration.

But even the ones of mine that don't look perfect -- they don't look bad by any means, they just don't look straight new out of the box. They hold up for years!

Mine have some spots where urine has changed the color of them but they are still holding up well. I've had mine for about 5 years now. I think one thing is if you use straight bedding you need to change the bedding a lot to prevent this. I got lazy at points and would let the cage go for a week with my other little guy. The bedding gets pushed around so you end up with spots where the chinchillas basically pee right on the pans. The liners are much nicer for this purpose and much less pee gets to the pans. My girls love pushing all the corners up though which is a bit annoying. I keep meaning to get more tiles or something for the corners.
