Hello, my daughter got her chinchillas about three weeks ago, and he just had surgery for a prolapse yesterday morning. The vet didn't send him home with any special instructions. However my other vet ( our usually one that our dogs see) was looking in a book and it had said that after a prolapse surgery to give a chinchilla baby food, except rice cereal, until the stitches are out. Has anyone heard of this, or know anything about it?

Nooo, I would not give baby food. That's just going to cause your chin to have diarrhea and prolapse again. You may want to get some Critical Care for herbivores by Oxbow or Tanya at fuzzieskingdom.com can overnight you some Essentials for Life, which my chins prefer. Both are hand feeding mixtures for ailing/underweight chins.

Honestly though, if your chin is eating normally with pellets, I would just continue to give those. You could dampen them a little bit with some water, just a little bit so they are a bit softer, but not turned to mush. I would also continue to give good quality hay. A chin going off it's feed is not an easy thing to fix and I would be just as concerned about that at this point.

Maybe someone else will chime in with different advice, but that is what I did in the past.
