I know rabbits are often very difficult to convert to a mostly hay diet if they aren't used to that, it took me months to make my rabbits good hay eaters. are chins the same way or are they generally very accepting of eating hay/eating a new brand of pellets?

Some chins eat what ever you give them and others are quite picky about it. If they are eating what they already have, I would not mess with changing anything.

Well assuming I'll be adopting any future chins, I know owners often don't feed them correctly so I would need to gradually change their diet. It would be a relief knowing I shouldn't have much trouble doing that. I hope, whenever I do get chins, that they aren't picky!

I would say it depends on the animals. My chins are very picky when it comes to their hay. I go through my bale of hay pick out the hay they will eat. The rest I donate to the animal shelter. I wish there were some rescues close to me than they can have some hay for free.

My first chinchilla ate timothy hay with his previous owner, and he stuck to that but over the years ate hay less and less. When I got my second one he didn't like timothy hay at all so we tried alfalfa and they went crazy over it. Now all 5 of mine prefer alfalfa over timothy hay. You'll just have to try and see what kind they like. When I bought timothy hay with marigolds in it, they'd just pick out the flowers and once the hay would hit the floor they'd ignore it entirely.

If the diet is really bad sometimes a cold turkey switch is the best approach. As far as hay goes, my chins go for the most fresh and fragrant hay I can find. If they were on poor quality hay or no hay there is no need to gradually switch them to good hay. Just give it to them :)

my chin wastes more hay than she eats. I've tried the hay cubes and different varieties of hay. Timothy hay is really the only hay she'll sort of eat and only if it is really fresh.

my girls didnt really eat any brand of timothy hay, no bluegrass from kleenmamas or anything but they love oxbow orchard grass.. they eat that all day!
