My mother called me and asked me if I wanted this for my birthday. She knows I've been in the market for a beginner guitar. I have never played one, but I really want to learn. This guitar on other websites has such mixed reviews. Some love it and say it's amazing. Others say it's the biggest piece of crap they have ever seen...

Help! She wants an answer on whether or not I want this in like the next 20 min. >.<

My boyfriend says for the price and a beginner guitar its ok. The videos and amp is what makes it worth it to him. He said you should be able to find a decent sounding guitar and case for cheaper at a guitar shop but you won't get the videos and would have to pay extra for the amp.

I'm honestly not worried about having an electric acoustic guitar so please tell him to ignore those items. I also already have some DVD's that I purchased in the past. Is the guitar itself worth it, or should I move on?

Thank you!

Can you ask him one more thing for me? When it comes to a beginner guitar, with basically just a guitar and case, what would he recommend for under $200?

I asked my boyfriend because he played in a band for a while and he's a guitar freak. He says Esteban guitars aren't worth it...and that one especially isn't worth it. He says he would try to find an Ibanez acoustic guitar. He says they are typically cheaper and the company makes pretty good stuff.

And now he's saying things I don't understand and it's hurting my head. What have you done Crysta???:neener:

He gave me this link http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-V70CE-Acoustic-Electric-Guitar-102567492-i1150613.gc and says like the other guys..if you have the chance to play it before buying it definitely do that. A lot of acoustic guitars are hit or miss with the cheap ones. You can get a cheap one that plays great or plays horribly. He's telling me another website now...geeze...what did I start?

And here's another link http://www.samash.com/p/CD60 Acoustic Guitar Assorted Colors_183689 he says to do to samash because they have lots of different guitars?

He wants to know what kind of music you plan on playing.

You can stop by and visit Ronda's, she's selling the store so has some good deals on guitars. :D Even pick up a few chinchillas while you're at it!

My boyfriend says to go to a guitar store and try out different ones to see which one feels best.

Problem is, I have never even held a guitar...how do I know which one feels best? lol

Before I buy anything I will stop by a music store and see what I like. Unfortunately there aren't many in Jacksonville, and I have to purchase online due to my mom paying for it. But this way I can at least hold a few. :p

Too bad I'm in FL Tara!

And Tab, I plan on playing basically the stuff I listen to, folk rock stuff. You know, college music. Haha.

Go to a guitar shop and ask them to let you hold a few beginner guitars. When I bought mine I went in, the owner asked me a few questions, told me what to look for in feel and helped me find the right guitar.

I'll agree with the others... even though you haven't really played before, you'll know if it's not right. For example, hedgiedaddy has a full size dreadnaught. I pick that up and it just feels bulky... like I have to reach around too far to strum. It also has steel strings... not really a problem for me as I've played viola before. But the action is waaaay too high for me (ie, the distance between the strings and the fingerboard). With it set up that way, I have to hold the strings down in a virtual death-grip in order to make it work. I suggested he lower the action. He said "it's a man's guitar." I laughed and hugged him because he's just too cute. He bought me a gift certificate for my own.

My dad has a classical guitar - major difference is it's a bit skinnier than Hedgiedaddy's and it has nylon strings... a definite bonus for newer players. They're easier on the fingers. It almost felt right to me... and I almost asked my dad if I could have it as he hasn't played it in a few decades... but still, just too fat.

My stepson has an electric guitar. Nice and skinny. Easy to hold the strings down. But the thing weighs about as much as an elephant... Perhaps I exaggerate. A *baby* elephant. Also, not for me.

So I went and checked out a smaller line: folk guitars, backpacker guitars, and parlor guitars. I did go back and forth between a few... held them, played some chords to make sure my fingers were also pleased. In the end, I went with a parlor guitar because it just *felt* right. It probably felt the most right to me because I used to hold my viola in a more guitar position and pluck the strings. Mind you, the guitar is bigger than the viola. But it had a nice sound and still felt right.

Okay... so... the point of all this is just to let you know that, at least in terms of narrowing the list down to the style you want, you'll need to hold a few different ones. Check out how hard/easy it is to deal with different types of strings. You'll be able to figure out what's feels right for you. In my opinion, unless you're really really committed to learning guitar or are a bit of a masochist, if it doesn't feel right, you're not going to keep playing it.
