So, my husband emails me right now to tell me the latest of the Chinchillas Galore breeding trials and tribulations. Our amazing Ritterspatch violet girl, Lilac, had an adorable violet baby boy 3 days ago. Today, she gave birth to ANOTHER baby. He/she was dead, obviously dead for awhile, but no smell, rotting, or anything wrong that my husband can see. Mom is acting fine and is nursing the other baby. Has anyone ever had this happen?

I just am in shock that mom is ok, and lived through 3 days of a baby inside of her. Maybe this PANR is making the babies too big? The baby was huge, about 70 grams. The first one, the live ok one, was 52 at birth. So odd, I guess separate uterine horns? But the little one made it not the big one? Expect the unexpected! Sheesh, what to expect tomorrow?

I had that happen once. Mom delivered. didn't feel anything when I palpated her once kit number 1 had been dry for a few hours and she was "clearly" finished. she was normal two days later she delivered a baby I found it still in the sack, no smell. Mom has had several babies since then. everything was fine. I have also heard of this happening and the kits being alive and well. I know one breeder who had a pair of twins and 2 weeks later another single kit. The Joy of having 2 uterine horns.

Chantel - you're going to be the breeding problem expert - horribly, you're going through everything all at once! [at least the past 6 months] So, when's the book coming out?
"The Cronicles of a Chinchilla Breeder, and all that can and will go wrong!"
Your chins are lucky you are so strong willed and caring - many would've given up!

Yup, had it happen here. Mom had quads and it took her two days to have them. They all lived too! Not such a strange story, just a disconcerting one. :)

I"m sorry to hear about this Chantel...You've had it awful these past few days, the joys of breeding aye?
Best wishes for you and your herd, I know all this has to be hard.

Hmmm do you really think these problems could be due to the PANR? I just switched to it but haven't had any kits born yet...Makes me a bit nervous...

Big babies randomly happen no matter what feed you're on. I feed PANR for years with no problems with giant babies.

Chantel this is why I now palpate all my females that have just delivered to double check for more babies as I have lost a female having trouble with the second baby. I have also had moms deliver and then have another baby 4 weeks later several times here.

I don't think it is the PANR really. I just love it so much, I hope I am not jaded.

Jags- I did palpate this girl, and she felt jello jiggly, but she is HUGE, 1100g so I could have easily missed it. I even checked a few times, because I thought I felt two babies in there at one point, guess I was correct. I had a live baby born 2 days after her other 2 siblings, and she was fine.

Just the luck of the draw I guess.

Whoa.. what is in the water down there Chantel? :) Glad that your mom is doing okay.

I've also had that happen, litter of quads. Three born, passed a fourth 4 days later. No smell, looked normal, fully formed and furred. Recall it was a 'middle' sized kit - 2g heavier than the smallest. It was completely encased in the sac, I often wonder if it was alive and suffocated before I got there.

I'm sorry. It must be awful having all these things happen when you're at work too. I really just wouldn't want to get out of bed. (hug)

I have not had siblings born days apart, but I have had the larger of two kits not survive while the littler one did. Chantel, you have everyone's share of bad luck lately. I am crossing my fingers and praying that it is over for you now.:hug2:
