For those of you who've never thought of it please learn from my mistake... I was sitting by Lily's cage tonight and noticed her water bottle was making a funny noise when she tried to drink. On closer inspection I realized that the bottle was full, and while the ball was moving no water was coming out. I boiled and re-filled bottles yesterday, so my poor baby probably hasn't had any water in 24 hours. Right away I grabbed Lady's bottle and gave it to Lily who proceeded to drink for about 5 solid minutes. Then off I went to Kroger (the only 24hr store in town) to buy more water bottles. I come home with two plastic off brand bottles but I figure they will last until I can make the 45 minute drive to Cincinnatti to get glass ones. Well just my luck BOTH new bottles are leaking so bad that I can't use them. So now because I didn't have a good spare to begin with I will be setting my alarm ever couple hours tonight so I can rotate our one working bottle. :hair: Tomorrow morning I'll drive into Cinci to replace Lily's broken bottle and pick up two spares to keep on hand.

MORAL OF THE STORY- ALWAYS HAVE A SPARE!

Aw Brittany that just sucks! Chins don't drink tons of water in a day and now that Lily guzzled a bunch she would be ok without a bottle til you got up in the morning. But you're right you should always keep a spare.

I have been building to have a few bottles per cage..more for cleaning purposes but it is always good to have bottles on hand

How sad! I know how that kind of thing feels. One time I came home and the water bottle in my boys' cage was completely empty. Now they have never had that much water. I looked and sure enough, I realized that all the litter was soaked! Their water bottle had leaked and lost all the water. I felt awful. Luckily I had another bottle to replace that one. Than another time my niece was helping me give the chinnies their water and she dropped the bottle on the hard floor and it broke. We had to run out to a store and grab one, so after that, I knew I should always have a spare. It's one of those things that you usually don't think about until that moment happens! I'm glad you will be getting extras now. :)

I've had that happen to me before...but as it turns out, it was "operator error" and not a bad water bottle. I now shake all my bottles over the sink a few times to get the water flowing before placing them back on the cages. I felt really horribly guilty for a while, but now I'm much more aware of my water bottles (and I do have a spare just in case).

The other day I laid a lixit bottle on the floor and I literally just tapped it with my foot. It didn't even hit the floor before the bottom broke off. I have no idea how it happend, especially since it was hit so lightly, but that should prove that you never know. :p

I keep two bottles on each cage, just as a precaution! If one stops working they can always go to the other.

That is an excellent idea! I now have 2 chinchillas and 4 WORKING water bottles so I think I might start doing that.

Paul once filled one with cold water immediately after it had been boiled, it cracked instantly. So that's just another example of what NOT to do.

you say you have glass bottles? Are they the super pet ones? I have bought at least 3 different glass super pet bottles and they all completely quit letting water out despite all the tips and tricks I read about. I would stay away from the glass super pet ones completely. I actually just use the petco brand ones and I have never had a problem with mine...
