Well, normally I house my chins in a FN 142, but for the summer I brought them back to my house in Berkeley, where I have two temporary cages set up, these large Superpet two level things, for temporary use. They haven't been an issue before, I make sure to give the guys a bit more playtime since they are a bit smaller.

Okay. So, for those who haven't used them, the cage part collapses and folds out and locks into place into grippers that are on the edge of the cage pan. They are fastened down by plastic clips. My chinchilla Ralphy, the other night, managed to chew apart the clip, making useless on keeping the folding bars locked in place. He then pulled the edge inward, in the way that edge collapses and slipped out under the edge of the cage wall he had pulled in.
(He normally doesn't chew plastic. It was surprising.)

Luckily I'm a light sleeper and caught him. He is now living in a chin-proofed bathroom so he can't escape. But I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions how to lock this cage wall into place. I need just like, some wire like thing that he can't chew through and it would work.

Blehh Ralphy :))

Either metal j-clips or metal zip ties. I would fix it asap- I would not feel comfortable leaving him the the bathroom for a long time even it is is chin proofed.

Zip tie all the sides. I know the cage you're talking about very well because I got it as the quarantine cage when I got Crash (he was supposed to be a companion for my ex's chin, long story to skip right now). He chewed out of it in about a week, including the little 'ledge' pieces around the edges of the pan that keep the wire from slipping inward. It's a plastic box with a metal top if I don't zip tie it together.

On the plus side, though, it makes a nice carrier for my cat, who stresses if she can't see where she's going while we're in the car.

Metal Zip ties, not regular plastic ones were suggested. I would assume he can chew the plastic ones in a heart beat
