Hello myself and my fiance just adopted a chin. and we are not sure of the age. (not sure of the sex either but i know how to check and will when it wakes up) was just wondering if there was any way to guess its age. the folks at petco seemed certain that it was quite young. thanks for any help

Without knowing the excact date of birth, there is no way to tell. Babies are extra fluffy, but once they shed that fur, there is no guessing. Most pet stores will give you an approximate age, based on what they've been told.

Your chin could be six months or four years old, there's no telling...like Cindy said, babies are extra fluffy and after that you just can't tell. If your chin is very young, he (or she?) will continue to grow. Generally chins will stop growing at around a year to two years (sometimes longer). The only way you will know an approximate age at this point is to track the growth rate.

Could you weigh the chin and give us a weight? It's possible that we could guess within a few months what your new baby's age could be. :)

Pet stores always say its a baby so they are easier to sell. The truth is they have no idea. Petco doesn't get DOB so they say whatever you want to hear. Sometimes they are young sometimes they are retired breeders.

after only a week he/she is already becoming quite use to us, and when we leave the cage open he likes to come over near us and jump around and explore. he seems fluffy to me but he is also my first chinchilla so im not real sure. i could prob take a picture of him, i dont think i have any scales that will register anything that small haha

Having a scale that measures in grams is a necessity when you have a chinchilla. That way you can monitor their weight. Weight loss is often a symptom of a greater issue. Many weigh their chinchillas once a month. :)

i bought my chin from petsmart-bad move. i also don't have an exact DOB for him which peeves me to no end. if i knew what i know now, i would've bought him from a breeder. that's besides the point here though. glad the little kipper has a home now.
