Acylic Cages

Hi, im a prospective owner of a chin.

Im still a long way in my decision to get one and I've got some questions regarding the cages.

I've been looking at acrylic cages from http://chinneychins.weebly.com/cages.html

now i understand that the chins need plenty of ventilation but I've been reassured by some breeders that its "alright" as long as you install a fan in one of these plastic boxes

please give me a heads up on this!

Well, those cages look neat, but HOLY MACKEREL are they expensive!!! Is that US dollars??? You can get 3 FN's for that much! Granted I have no idea how much shipping to Singapore would be.

I am not a fan of acrylic cages, nor am I a fan of melamine anymore after having owned them. I think the ventilation stinks in them and I think they hold heat terribly. I have maternity cages here that were made by KKCritters and I wouldn't own another one if someone gave me a truckload. The entire front is wire, and you can still actually feel the heat when you open them up to clean them or get a chin in or out. The acrylic would be even worse than a wood cage. I can't even imagine how miserable it would be in one of those.

They look nifty I suppose, but I wouldn't have one.

Hey, its a local producer and its in SGD which 450USD for a 560SGD one.

hey, my intention of getting an acrylic one was because i was warned that there would be plenty of fur and dust created by the chin. Ive got a slight sinus allergy and I'm worried it might aggravate it.

They look really cool, But I have to agree with Tunes, I think the ventalation would be pretty bad and they would heat up pretty quick. I can understand why you would want one....but I don't think it would be so great for the chin.

I would say such a cage would be a bad idea. If you have allergies talk to a doctor about what you can do for them. An air filter might also help you out. Depending what allergies you have a chinchilla may or may not bother them. Between an air filter and allergy meds it could be workable. However, in my opinion it'd be better to pass on owning a chinchilla then putting it in one of these cages. Solid nonwire cages like these are more appropriate for animals that do well in tanks.

I have to agree with Lillybabe here, if you think the allergies would be such an issue that you want to enclose the chin, it would absolutely be better to pass on getting a chin in the first place.
Ventilation would NOT be good enough, and you would be risking the chins life.

Anything that has enough ventilation would allow everything you're concerned about to come out unless you set up some extensive filtration system directly to the cage.

Personally, with the fact I don't think it would be good for ventilation, it would be hard to add shelves and attach stuff to as drilling the acrylic may crack it and I think it would be a terror to keep clean, every dribble, sneeze, and spray would be plastered on the side of the wall. Like the glass doors on a toy store I think it would be super hard to keep it looking clean.

I think it's great that you are considering these things before getting chins. Fur can be reduced by coming, and I don't tend to have a problem with a lot of lose fur around, but maybe you could use a mask to dust. I have severe sinus issues and I feel your pain on this. If it's not an allergy issue and truly a sinus issue, there isn't a lot you can do other than masks... If it's an allergy issue you could do an over the counter medication such as Clariton if you have that there.
