So my new apartment apparently has central AC, but honestly I don't trust that to not suddenly stop working come summer-time since I can't control it myself. I noticed too late after signing the lease that our AC units won't fit into our windows...not only do the windows slide open sideways, but there are bars on them since we are on the ground floor (to prevent break-in). I really wish I had noticed this before we moved here, but when I heard there was central AC I thought I'd hit the jackpot. It's really too bad because I just got a new window unit last summer.

Does anyone here have a suggestion for what type of AC unit I should get, since I'm probably going to need to get a portable one/a type that isn't for the window? Also should I look into a generator? I don't know anything about how those work, but just curious because they seem like a smart idea.

i'd check into your lease to make sure that a generator is allowed to be used in the event of a power failure, since some buildings/landlords are against gas fueled items being inside the apartments or in the building.

as for the air conditioner, a portable sounds like the way to go. they aren't cheap! i've been looking around for one myself, because my condo building's bylaws are fuzzy on whether or not window units are allowed, and i've never seen one installed in any suite here. i'm not sure which brand name is best though, sorry.

I found my portable AC unit on Craigslist for $50. They are usually like $350, so it was a killer deal!
It's sort of bulky and big but totally worth it for us. You have to hook the hose up outside though, so it can release the hot air somewhere. I tried leaving the hose inside for a while and it kept shutting off because it thought it was too hot in the room. Oh, and ours thinks the water container is full when it gets really humid in the room. It's a little finicky and took us a bit to figure it all out, but now it works fine.
