Hi there, I just got my chin about a week ago. He is about 2 years old or at least that's what I have been told by the breeder. He has been playing eating and I guess pretty much normal and adapting well. The problem is he always bites the cage though he has lots of things to bite and play with. Doesn't like coming to my hands, the most he will do is when I put both my hands in the cage, it's either he ignores me or he will just come up with his 2 front paws for 3 secs and jump back in. Even when I try to scoop him up he refuses to and keeps jumping away. He doesn't really bite but I would say it's more of a nibble is that true? And does it mean that he is not a baby it will take a linger period of time for him to trust me. What should I do.??? Lastly even when I put a treat on my hand he totally ignores me out of ten maybe seven times. Please help???

chins are generally very afraid animals so it takes a while for them to get used to you. it mite take him weeks before he will let you touch him. just be patient and it will pay off

Chinchillas are not dogs, they are prey animals and don't like being pet. It is a natural instinct for them to shy away from a larger animal trying to touch or grab them.

You've only had him a week. Go slowly, be patient and spend time just talking to him and not being in the cage. Get him used to you before getting in there and going after him. Slowly.

It is going to take longer than a week to earn his trust. I wouldn't say that because he's not a baby it would take longer for him to trust you...it just depends on the environment that he came from.

Sit by the cage and talk to him so he gets used to your voice. Do not take him out of the cage unless it is a necessity to do so while he is adjusting.

What kind of treats are you offering? 10 in a week is a lot of treats.

Thank you for the advise. I am mainly giving him raisins only for now and it's everyday. Well, as I spoke to a trainer here in Singapore and was told that they can be trained and he just told mr to take furballl out and he showed mr how to handle them. His chin are all very friendly and they can stand win jump around and I think mainly they are used to being handled or trained shall I say. Is there anything that I cab do to make him know that everything is ok?

Stop giving the raisins. That is a LOT of sugar for that chinchilla. They don't need treats every day or multiple times a day...that does a heck of a lot more harm than good.

The only thing you can do is take it slowly. By moving too quickly you will lose any ground you gain with him. Chinchillas are prey animals and you need to take it slowly. I don't know who the trainer is but if they think just grabbing out a chinchilla and forcing it to be held is a good idea, they are not knowledgeable. NO MORE RAISINS.

Please read through the FAQ section on diet and nutrition for chinchillas to learn what treats are suitable for chinchilla consumption.
