Not sure if anyone can answer this or not but thought I'd ask...

My a/c shut off, came back on, shut off and came back on. did that about 4 times. Then it made the beating sound like someone was turning it off and on repeatedly really fast, then it quit and went off. I tried turning it back on and nothing.
Then after about 5 minutes I tried to turn it on and it came on. Worked for a bit and went off again.
I waited again and tried turning it back on. It worked.

Anyone know why it keeps doing this?

-I'm kind of hoping its just a ghost playing a mean trick on me but I highly doubt it. And if it is a ghost, I'm super sorry for making in mad and wish it would stop playing this mean trick. In return for upsetting it, I'll let it bug my sister...shes in the basement. :)

EDIT to Add: it came back on at 12:09am and its currently 12:27am (according to my clocks) and its still working.

Could it be freezing up? I'd take a look at the evaporator coil and see if it has ice on it. You may be able to this by just opening the cover and sliding off the filter...or you may need to remove some screws so you can see it easily.

Check the filter in the front, and see if it's clean - I just rinse it out in the kitchen sink, and bounce it on a towel a few times to dry it out, once a week!
If that's not it, maybe turn it off for a couple hours tonight, and let it defreeze, and run out! Sometimes the drain hole becomes clogged on the outside - clean the hole, let ALL the water out, and it should be fine!

It's still running at the moment...its now 1:29am

I might be freezing up. I have no idea. I don't see any ice on the coil. Dad said the coil might need cleaned off again but that's never caused this to happen before. I'm going to have daddy check it out more thoroughly tomorrow.

I just cleaned the filter last night. I can't turn it off because its the a/c in the chins room and its still rather warm outside..even at 1:30 in the morning. The backside of the a/c is like 10 foot off the ground, I can't reach it.

could it be alittle older so maybe there is a lose connection someplace in the wiring....can't think of anything else..sorry..
