I have two boys: Ozzy and gretzky
I purchased both of them when they were kits (2 months and 5 months). They have been living with each other for 4 months. (so they are 6 months and 9 months)

I have a friend who has a single male chinchilla and she informed me that if you don’t introduce them to other chinchillas if you want any more young then you may not be able to have them live together.

I am interested in getting 1-2 more chinchillas. I would like to house them together in my FN 142.

Is the statement above true about getting them together young (what I mean is should you adopt more at this age or is it possible to wait till they are older and adopt more still- hope that made sense)? And do you recommend I adopt them sooner rather than later due to their age?

Thanks.

(ps I wish I had my camera from work Gretzky is sitting on the top of his chin maze just watching my type away :p )

Well, it is also always harder to intro a new chin into an already established pair. So the younger you do it, the better normally. But with having a pair, it may just be harder to get them to accept a third.

I had 3 older male chins in 1 cage. I then wanted to add a 2 mth male with them. I put all 4 in a different cage and watched them to make sure that they got along. They been together for 1 yr.

If you have a 2 story ferret nation and you get a couple more chins, and they don't get along, each level is plenty big enough for 2 chins. I have 2 chins in nearly all my individual stories in my 2 and 3 story ferret nation. Everyone has plenty of room!

I have introed chins that were all over 1 year of age. The three of them got along great. No problems. Sometimes it can take time, but it is not impossible to intro chins into groups.

thanks everyone

oh one last question... can you add an additional level onto a 2 story FN 142?
By that I mean does anyone have a set up where they can use all 3 storys? I have my base pans in mine so there wouldnt be a worry about them falling down 3 storys since there is a flat surface on all levels.

Just wondering.
Thxs

When you bring in the new chins make sure you have a separate space they can live in indefinitely (whether you section off your cage or get a second one) We decided to get our baby Lily a buddy (Donna) when she was 5 months old and Donna was about 1 year. Lily was dangerously hostile towards Donna for several months. Eventually they got a long, Lily still tries to pick a fight if she doesn't get first dibs on the dust jar or if Donna takes one of her toys. For this reason we've decided that they're just going to be playtime buddies but never cage mates. Good luck!
